My parents are moving to a new house and I want to help them renovate their living room. Here are a couple photos.

We need to buy a new tv cabinet, carpets, a couple single seaters that compliment the couch. We can also paint the walls and change the lighting.

I cant afford to change the carpets so we need to work with that. We have a couch which looks like the photo below but larger (2 1/2 seater). Id like to keep that as well

We also have a coffee table which a dark brown color. Keeping it is optional but ideally we can make it work.

We have Ikea and we may get some of the furniture from there. We are not going for a specific look. Basically im looking for advice on colors to paint, what style of furniture we should get and what colors they should be.But any advice would be useful.

Thanks in advance.

One thing the TV stand/cabinet has to be left of the heater because of attenna and satellite cables. The there is alot more space than it looks on the pictures.

It is good to have such a blank canvas to work.Take time to decorate it. Don't hurry.Create a file in which you preserve your favourite picturs of home settings, either from magazines or from anywhere else. occassionally turn the pages to look which features are more appealing to you,But don't try to gather all good ideas.Just select a few tricks.unless the work will end in a mess. When imitating from a picture try to notice in totality. If u choose a particular color/upholstry and just ignore the other colors/ setting of accent piees, other furnishing you can create a mismatch and then you won't get the actual effect of your source picture.Harmonization is the essence behind a good home decor. Even if you donot go for a particular style , you try to follow a particular color scheme and pattern .

M\y suggestion is to paint the wall behind the couch in dark brown./chocolate color and keep the trest of the wall color as it is. Is the couch has the same color as the picture is?Then add some colorful cushion to it. You can go for vibrant colors. But if not sure, stick yourself to the combination of coffee/ chocolate and the present /existing color of the room.As in present condition the couch is the largest object in in the room, take its color as the base and the dark brown color of the coffee table will be the highlighter/accent color. If you change the carpet go for a same color one.You can have wooden floor also .But what is important that u should add a large chocolate/cofee color rug. to make a sense of warmth.Keeping the TV unit beside the heater will not be a good idea. Because it will divide the viewer's attention from the central/ focal point of the area. But if you don't have any other option you have to do it. Every house faces some of these problems and we have to go with them.In that case make the Tv unit the main attraction point of the room. so, you have to be choosy about it. To speak the truth to change the centre of attraction from the heater to a place which is just beside it, you have to inject some extraordinary thing in it.So, in this case go for a good investment and do not think only about utility.Choose its color according to the total color scheme of the room.Add some matching accessories.I prefer to be them only of the same color but of the same material also. It automatically creates a harmonization and sets the theme. You can change the curtain too to add a bit of extra color. As the walls are huge I will suggest to make a patterned picture gallary in one of it, Preferably in a lighter coloured wall.
It is better to arrange for formal sitting arrangement in this type of complementary color scheme. So don't go for beanbags.Rather use the same material of your existing couch for the new seaters. It will be good to choose only the complimentary color(i.e. coffee/chocolate) for these newer ones to create a dramtic effect. For lighting, always opt for both direct and indirect light setting. This gives a sense of depth in the total decoration and do not make the room boring after some times.

Hope this helps.

That looks like a beautiful, calm room - I love those windows! Personally I'd play up the view of the trees outside, by painting the room a nice pale green, which would look great with that white trim and the mantle. The furniture could either go white or wood. I'd go for white, but it depends what you have and what you like. I'm thinking it would look great as a cosy room with big sofas and throw rugs, cushions, vases of flowers and a big mirror above the mantle to reflect that view. What a great room.
