It's from the plant Opuntia, or Prickly Pear Cactus

It depends on the size shape and colour. If it is tapered at one end and almost flat at the other but goes inwards it can be the fruit of opuntia (prickly pear). All prickly pear fruits are edible but the most fleshy is that of Opuntia ficus-indica. Another indication and a sure one is whether the spines have glochids. These are very small spines that if you look at them under a microscope they look like barbed spines. But you do not need to look at a microscope because they are very lousy to remove because they tear the skin microscopically to remove. Note. this are not the normal spines that are also found on all cacti including the Opuntia but are found near the base of the spines. The fruit of the opuntias are called tuna in Mexico.
Other edible cactus fruit are those from the cereus family such as Stenocereus, Lophocereus and others. These are called by various names but mainly garambulos. I suggest you go to cactus and succulent plant mall for further information.

The only one I know off my head is a pear cactus but you can always go to www.gardener.com or go on your search line and put fruit of cactus's and see what comes up and then decide from there. Good Luck. You can also go to www.finsandfriends.com if not com then org but go there and there is a place that says ask polly ponder questions and type the question in and the president of the watergarden club will answer you question and email it back to you. You might want to go there and just look it is a cool website plus my dad is the president.
