Nan Province in the Eastern North is my favorite place in Thailand. I would have said Chiang Mai but Nan is much more peaceful and serene. The locals there are so kind and friendly. I rented a bike in Nan City and parked it without a lock in front of a hotel for half a day and it still was there when I came back to retrieve it. The whole time I was there (3 days), I'd never seen any traffic jam. The food was so inexpensive. The city is so rural but yet I can surf the net with high speed connection at the hotel. With the convenience of stores, restaurants and hotels, Nan city is the hub for tourists to stop over before or after their trips outside the city to National Park and other attractions. Also, it has the cleanest streets of all the provinces I've ever visited. The size of their streets remind me of ours in the USA. (very wide streets). Worth mentioning here is that there is a stool to sit down while talking on the phone in each phone booth. To me, Nan City is the old Chiang Mai of 30 years ago.
