The council did my anual gas service yesterday, and there is a leak, they have condemned it and capped it, so I have no gas now, my question is, can exposure to household gas cause any medical problems, and if so what would the symptoms be ?

If it is a severe leak, I would be more concerned about explosion. The gas utility can shut off your meter and lock it until the problem is fixed. If it is a minor leak, you should call a heating technician. Exposure to gas in even small concentration can cause serious health problems.

yes it can.also the council should have installed a carbon monoxide alarm,or it should have been installed before you moved in. its the LAW. it's not the gas that can make you ill or kill you. its the carbon. also the council should have left you a booklet informing you of what to do when you smell gas or if your alarm goes off, what the symptoms are to Humans you become very sleepy tired all the time headaches or feel fuzzy heads all the time,]. long exposure you will not wake up.contact your council again if they have not given you this info or alarm and ask why.
also contact your gas supplier for this info as well. hope you and your family are well,if not contact your practise nurse or nhs24 or nsh2 direct for info.

dizziness, light headedness, nausea, lethargy. Gases affect our brain....it can damage the blood cells that carry oxygen to our brains and cause damage in that way. Inhailing gas also affects the oxygen level throughout our body and affects the organs and their tissues causing their ability to do their jobs difficult. If you are concerned get checked out. there are simple blood tests that they can do to determine how much of a certain substance or gas that you have been exposed to.
