Only God knows. It is impossible to understand and and rationalize God. This goes beyond human intellect and understanding. God makes the rules and we live by them.

Would you blame the govenment if you caused a car accident by driving carelessly? Or, the doctors when you come down ill because of an unhealthy lifestyle? Or, your school for your bad grades due to your not studying? Would you be at fault if your child decided to steal, after you taught him why he shouldn't? Then how can you hold God responsible for the troubles humanity has brought upon itself?

"Happy is the man that keeps on enduring trial, because on becoming approved he will receive the crown of life, which Jehovah promised to those who continue loving him. When under trial, let no one say: “I am being tried by God.” For with evil things God cannot be tried nor does he himself try anyone. But each one is tried by being drawn out and enticed by his own desire. Then the desire, when it has become fertile, gives birth to sin; in turn, sin, when it has been accomplished, brings forth death." -- James 1:12-15

If we did not have free will, we could not love. Love is a voluntary thing, not something that can be programmed. it is something we choose, not instinct. Would you enjoy life without the ability to love or feel the love of others? God designed us with the ability to share his love. It can't be forced, or pre-programmed. Such would not be love.

"Do not be misled, my beloved brothers. Every good gift and every perfect present is from above, for it comes down from the Father of the [celestial] lights, and with him there is not a variation of the turning of the shadow."" -- Ja 1:16-17

Free will was given so we could choose to love God and have fellowship with Him. This elevates us into the realm of being a child of God. God doesn't punish us for using it incorrectly - we punish ourselves. If a parent tells a child "don't touch that it is hot and will hurt you" and the child touches it anyway - is it the parents fault that the child was hurt? No. So it is with God.

Do you want someone to love you or believe you if you force them to? That's not really love or respect, right? That's why there's free will. I don't think God punishes you if you use your free will incorrectly. Along with your free will, you have this thing called a brain. You use that in conjunction with your free will to make a good choice based on what your faith tells you is ok.

Something came to mind as I was reading your question. This is a question that is asked a lot on Y/A. And normally by those who are not believers. I am thankful that God gave me free will, so that I could chose to love Him, and live for Him. I am thankful for His choosing to save me from the sin that brought death. He could have chosen not to do that. He punishes us because He loves us. If you are a believer then you know that passage in scripture that talks about the discipline of the Lord- earthly fathers discipline their children so why shouldn't our heavenly father. I am sure that you are talking about eternal punishment. We all deserve death due to the choice that we made to sin. So all you need to do is accept Jesus as the sacrifice for your sin, and you will live eternally with God and escape eternal punishment, which is separation from God forever. The way we are without Christ we deserve to die, but HIS CHOICE was to give us A CHOICE to be forgiven.

Free will or free agency is the greatest gift we have here on earth, without it we would be like robot with no purpose in life but to follow what he wills, another fact about free will is for us to test our faith in choosing what is right and what is wrong. Just imagine if Adam and Eve dont have free will in Garden of Eden and just followed what the Lord commanded them -which is not to eat the fruit from the Tree of Good and evil, do you think you would be here asking the question,of course no for they will remain in that state doing no good for the knew no evil.
And as for you my friend you have to use your free will the right way for in the end it is the one that will judge us on JUDGEMENT DAY, whatever we do here while we are still alive according to the use of our free will and faith will be the basis of judgement afterlife...

God did punish us: We were eternal beings cast out to be mortal men.

God gave us the land (Earth) and that is where our free will is.

Does punish us when we use free will incorrectly? If not in this life, He may in the next.

I suppose Adam might have asked that same question. Adam and Eve gave us the ability to choose wrong. It's really that simple.

Now getting back to God is our goal. So it's probably good to ponder the question you asked, but not for too long. Our eyes should be busy in Christs direction! ( ;

If God had not given us free will, dont you think we would be no more than the robot or toys created by us or maximum, animals and birds that were created without freewill. We were created special than them. And just like how each parents who love their children correct them, our Lord who loves us have all the rights to correct us. Don't u think ?

Free will to do as he wants or we'll be thrust into a lake of fire...doesn't sound like any kind of free will to me, God sounds like a Saddam Hussein type figure.
