Let me see if I can explain it. I am Protestant. I have only a little knowledge of Catholic teachings, but I'm using Wikipedia as a guide. I will try to contrast and compare the two.

Jesus clearly did leave Peter in charge. I realize that it is the Catholic teaching that Peter was the first pope. I believe that Jesus left Peter in charge of the Christian church. I think, as the Catholic church became what it is, certain people began to believe that some of the teachings were wrong. Namely, Martin Luther. He believed that some of the things the Catholic church was doing were not biblical.

First, he believed that salvation is by faith and not works. He said, "Jesus Christ, our God and Lord, died for our sins and was raised again for our justification… herefore, it is clear and certain that this faith alone justifies us..." To me, it means that by believing in Jesus Christ as the Savior, we are saved.

Luther also had an issue with indulgances being used as a way to have sins forgiven. It was said, "As soon as the coin in the coffer rings, the soul from purgatory springs." Luther thought that God alone can forgive sins. Forgiveness cannot be purchased.

From my personal view: I am protestant rather than Catholic because I feel protestantism is based on the Bible (and Catholicism not so much-sorry, but it's how I feel). I feel that only God can forgive sins and therefore, what is the purpose of confession? No human on this earth has the power to forgive sins or decide what one needs to do in order to have the sin forgiven. (Maybe I watch too many movies, but don't Priests take your confession, and tell you to say so many hail marys, etc?) Also, the only thing you need to do to have sin forgiven is to ask God to forgive it. Doing what a Priest tells you is not necessary.

Also, I believe we are to worship God alone. The Catholic religion seems to me to worship Mary and the saints some. I've heard people say that these things are just reminders, but I've also seen crucifixes. God commands us, "You shall not make for yourself a graven image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth..." (Exodus 20:3-6) It is very plain that God does not wish us to have these images.

It's not simply that one or two Priest or Popes made "mistakes." Luther believed that many of the teachings were wrong and that the Catholic church was not leading people to salvation. He believed that teachings should be based on the Bible. Which is also what I believe.

Like someone else said, don't get caught up in labels. Read the Word of God and Jesus' teachings for yourself and decide. Don't necessarily take anyone's teaching that cannot be backed up with scripture. That's how I see it and why I choose to believe how I believe.

Peter was married, never went to Rome and was never a "Roman Catholic". History confirms this.

When Jesus said to Peter "you are Peter. Upon this rock I will build My church", He (Jesus) did not mean that Peter was the basis of the church - what Peter said was the foundation of the church. Peter had just said "You are the Annointed One, the promised Messiah". The Roman Catholic Church (its proper name as 'catholic' just means universal.

BBL with more.

Took 3 hours but I'm back.

As the "church" got further and further away from the teachings of Jesus and the bible, the leaders put as much emphysis on tradition as they did on the bible. Until the reformation. Some in the 'church' started reading the bible to find the truth and found the truth - that much of what was being taught was not in the bible. The 'church' did not like this and killed these 'heretics' or excommunicated them. This lead to the start of the protestants (protesting against the eronious teachings of the Catholic Church).

Go to a Roman Catholic Church if you like. If you do READ the bible to see what it says about everything. You may be surprised at how what is taught dis/agrees with the bible.

church above in inverted commers as it denoted a section of christondom not the true church.

"True Church"? Ask another question.

God is the founder of the church (elected).
Jesus is the way to God.
Peter is the Apostle that went to Rome and was executed there.
The Catholic Church (specifically the Rome Catholic Church) is the religion that Constantine made the state religion. The successors of Peter called Pope became Pontiffs, highest ranking religious leader of Rome.
Protestant (Protest) Church disagreed with the Roman Catholic Church and based their religion on the bible.

Answer: As you can see, there are different packages in Christianity. Open one up and see what you get.

According to writings of C.S. Lewis, Deitrich Bonhoeffer and Church History by Shelley, the first Pope was Emperor Constantine, for which the City of Constantinople is named for.

There was at least one female Pope in the early days of Catholicism named Joan. See the writings of Tacitus, Julius Africanus, Lucius of Samosata, and Mara Bar-Serapion.

Peter being the first pope is purely Catholic dogma according to the Catholic encyclopedia and Catholic History.

You question is barely comprehendable.

Yet Peter was not the first Pope. Peter most likely did not start the church in Rome. Peter was married.

Jesus started the Church. All who are IN HIM are apart of that body. The Bible clearly teaches us who we are to be IN HIM. And its not about a label.

For 1500 years, while the one, true, and Catholic church was converting the whole world to Christ, no one seriously disputed any of your facts.

Then one day, some enterprising folks wanted to do things their own way, so they endeavored to deny what was, and dispute what was to come.

Just look at some of the wacky answers posted here and you'll see the results of the false teachings and late day traditions of the fathers of the reformation.

Protestants don't believe that Peter was the first Pope, or that he was the head of the early Christian Church.

I have no idea. It is obvious to anyone who has eyes to see that Jesus left Peter in charge (Matthew 16:19; John 21:15-17).
