Some scientists and even some religious scholars explain the appearance of the Virgin Mary to large crowds (Fatima, Lourdes) as group hallucinations. Even some UFO sightings have been explained away. The closest I have come to this is watching a movie in a large theater and all the patrons feel the same thing....is that a hallucination??/ What about the group mentality of an angry audience watching a sporting match??? Rock concert??? I think the group hallucination is easier described as a collective conscience

How is any hallucination "possible"? They are as real as the little voice of your own thinking mind. They are unwelcome. They may be multiple voices of both sexes. They can not be turned on or off at will.
Visual hallucinations are as real as a normal visual experience. They too are not generally welcome and can not be controlled by the will. Group hallucinations would disprove the organic theory of hallucinations being the product of an individual dysfunctional brain I have never had a group hallucoination but have had some auditory hallucinations which were heard by at least one other.

This is a question for the Anthropology section.
For example, did you know that in many rituals in India, participants become possessed?
I spoke with an anthropologist who studied the culture. He doesn't believe there are ghosts, but he tried to explain the psychology of the ritual and said, "You can't NOT get possessed." These girls really believe that a spirit takes over their bodies, and it is created by the effects of the social structure and the music and dancing and all sorts of psychological factors.
