I am asking this for a friend and here the story goes:
Someone told my friend that they took their atm card to the bank the atm machine and put in the wrong number and it kept their card. Now is that true or not?
(i do not know because i do not fool with atm cards)
Thanks

I think it may if you enter your pin wrong 3 times in a row... but not sure. There are a lot of scams were crooks will rig real machines with card catchers (that you can't see unless you look realllly closely) and then they steal your card because you think the machine "ate" it.

Usually, it's after three wrong tries that the machine will keep the card.

It's also possible that the machine may be programmed to spit the card out after multiple wrong tries. The machine may then refuse to accept anymore attempts within the next 24 hours or unless the card owner calls the bank and speaks to someone directly to un-freeze the card/accunt.

But, I believe that the card being kept is the more usual occurrence.

You friend needs to call her bank and ask what their policy is, how their machines act/react in such situations for the real answer to her problem.

She can also go into the bank or call the bank's 800 number for an answer. Also, the bank should have a computer history/record of any attempts to use her card at the ATM and what happened. It's a really simple problem to solve.

yes it is true

usually an ATM machine will give you three chances for you to enter the right pin before it keeps the card. Have your friend go to the bank where she has the acct with and she will get her card back.

Usually takes 3 times but more and more atm machine are going to just a swipe where the atm card isn't inserted. But if you put it in wrong three times it locks your account then you have to call your fbank or whatever to get it unfrozen

NOPE , IT USUALLY THROWS THE ATM CARD OUT OF THE ATM MACHINE. NOW I DID ONCE ,GET MY ATM CARD STUCK IN A MACHINE AND WAS ISSUED A NEW CARD ..THAT MAY HAVE BEEN THE REAL ISSUE!

no they dont keep your cards. it could just be a honest mistake and it will give you sort of a reciept that says you got the password wrong and i think you will have to call someone to verefy that that is your card and that its not stolen before you can use it again
