Chocolate besides tasting good and having almost medicinal qualities has one other remarkable property. The fat in chocolate is shelf stable and will not go rancid no matter how long it is stored.
Chocolate will be good for years and years and years.
If you open the chocolate and see some white material on the surface this is called checking and is due to a little separation of the cocoa butter from the chocolate. This is just separation, and everything is perfectly safe to eat.
It is possible that chocolate stored a long time will not taste as good, or have a somewhat chalky texture. If this is severe then melt the chocolate, this will allow for the components of the chocolate to be reintegrated, and then just use it for other purpose.
If you are anywhere near the expiry date (like within a year or two) then there will be no problem whatsoever with the chocolate.

Most food dates are put on foods with about 4 days of edible freshness left to the product, as far as soda I'm not sure. if you eat stale chips it's probably OK. Some things like sour cream last much longer than the expiration date because of the cultures used in processing it. The government requires foods to be dated before they actually go bad. But it is good advice not to consume foods after their expiration date

If the chocolate looks OK (not white and scaly) and it doesn't have anything in it like grasshoppers ants peanuts etc it is OK. If it has other ingredients it may go bad and taste bad but it is unlikely to kill you unless the grasshoppers have rotted then you should not eat it :) but you weren't going to eat chocolate covered grasshoppers were you?
