I've been using Yahoo answers for a while now, and I don't see how anyone gets uplifted on here. Mostly I see people arguing. Splitting hairs and sparsing quotes, and ignoring those who disagree. On every side, not just "the other side."
As one bright participant noted on here, religious debate is very much like tic-tac-toe. Once you learn the basic steps, it ends in a stalemate every time.
So why do we still come on here and argue?

Welcome to a gathering of humans. :-) We rarely agree and almost never agree to disagree.

Add to that the higher number of intelligent people online who find their way here and you've got a huge number of know-it-alls (myself included) who have the answers to everything and if they don't have it, they can find it.

Add to THAT the fact that religion is the most divisive element in the entire world and it's bound to get ugly the majority of the time.

I usually hang out here for a month then take a month break because I tire of the arguing and stupidity I find here.

The non believers will NEVER believe and discourse with non-believers only makes the believers more secure in their belief. All we can hope for is that someone, just one person, will hear our side (whichever side it is) and think a little more about their own side.

Well in a very few rare cases people actually ask a question to which they seek an answer. Like which scripture says this....

This Category however is more about opinions then literal fact. However, there have been times when I have learned something from a nonChristian. Or perhaps I was able to understand a nonChristian's point of view that I have never thought about or seen before.

Yes of course there is harm here. Some Atheist make all atheist look bad and some Christians make all Christians look bad.

I am a Christian. And I just hope to shed some light that there are Christians out there who are critical thinkers. Who have an open-mind and can be logical and rational. A Christian who is theologically grounded and patience and understanding with others. I post answers in an effort just to do that. And to show that not all Christians are uptight or quick to point fingers or condemn.
I pray I have been able to do that for just one unbeliever. And if I haven't I am going to continue until someone has.

I look at it this way, this is the internet. People who have no backbone in real life say things that they wouldn't ordinarily say in real life so, I take the bad things/insults with a grain of salt. I can usually only take any section in small doses because some people are just desperate for attention or ask pretty moronic questions. I don't think anyone comes here to be enlightened. Most come here to be debate or be a troll. It's interesting to read other points of view and sometimes I do learn a little tid bit of info so it's not always pointless & annoying to come here.

The arguments are counterproductive, but that doesn't mean everything on here is useless. I've learned a lot, and the stalemates only help to reinforce my agnosticism. If anybody knew, somebody would have won.

I think a lot of people are learning from each other. I also had a similar feeling like yours, and posted a slightly different question, and had amazing responses. Maybe I should post it again, or you can look at my profile and see the question. It is about whether we learned anything from each other.

I think it's much healthier to argue belief systems in this forum than it is to go out and fight a war over religion. Nobody dies here.

So, no. I think the opposite: this does more good than harm.

Debate is the salt of life. I like it here, it's really fun. If you don't like it, you can leave, we won't miss you.
