Look for a room for rent from home owners.
I have a three bedroom townhome I rent out cheaply for $500 each to three people. The two have been there since 1998.

Los Angeles is not affordable.
Avg about $1200/month for rent if you want to live alone.
$800 for a room that you'll need to share.

I am not sure if your including Ventura County in your term of Los angeles.. but it is definitely more for your money and a great area..used to live there.. Aloha

well, you would do well to find a decent, ethnically mixed neighborhood. If you aren't from l.a. it might not be wise to move to a high crime area even if it is cheap. Try Silver Lake, its kinda artsy, mixed place, decent food, not to expensive.
