I just took a taxi home for $5.10. I gave the guy a 20 and he gave me back 3 fives. I asked if he could break one of them and give me five ones, and then I used four of them to tip him 4 dollars. He acted like I was being petty about the extra dollar. But I think I was still generous, and I'm not very wealthy at the moment. What do you think?

4 dollars is a lot for a tip of a taxi driver when you only spent $5.10, but it's also weird that you gave him 4 and not 5. Maybe you should have given him like 3 or 2.

I'm with most people. You are very generous! I don't even konw if I would tip $4 for a $5.10 cab ride! I'd probably tip $2-3. Perhaps you might have misinterpreted his reaction. He might just be shocked that he got a $4 tip from you. And.. if he really thought $4 was too little.. gee, his math must not be very good. That's almost 80% tip! Don't worry, you're FAR from being cheap... quite the opposite.

I think you were more than generous. A $4 tip on a fare of $5.10 is somewhere near 90%. The average tip would be 20%. He should have been pleased if you had given him $2.00

Goodness, do you have to tip Taxi drivers as well?
The meter fare is the final price in my country. I hate American etiquette of people holding out their hand for everything they do.

I think they should all campaigner for better wage conditions and stop lowering themselves to the level of beggars. After all many of the hotels charge exorbitant prices for just a bed. Drinks are overpriced in most bars hotels and clubs as well as the meals.
Ever noticed in movies how people peel off notes and leave them on the table, yet never touch the meal. Why would you pay for something you didn't eat. Was it that bad?

No, tipping is bad for business. Wherever I travel I will say keep the change only of the act of the person doing the service is exceptional and they have lavished attention on the fineries of dining.

The only tip I would give any bellboy is Love your Mother and be kind to animals. Never expect more than to do the job you are employed for and to do it well without complaint or asking for charity!

If you ever travel to Britain, always have a lot os small change as Taxi drivers rarely give change! All you will get for a 25 pound fare after tendering 2X20 pound notes is. Thank ya Guv very kind of yer!

He's an ***, a $4 tip on a $5.10 ride is very nice. If you ride cabs a lot, remember his face, carry small change and next time give him $1... If he's really happier if he gets $1 he didn't have to make change for than $4 when he does, well, accomodate him!

$4.00 was more than adequate since your ride only cost you $5.10. You only need to tip 20%. You're not cheap. He's petty. I mean, it takes what, 2 seconds to break a 5?!

Actually that was more than generous. The standard for most things are 15-20 % of the price as a tip. You gave him way more than that. No need to feel guilty. I think that your tip was more than fair. His reaction should have been much friendlier.

Sarcastro; Undoubtedly you really [were generous]!
(You are no 'Visiting Billionairess': the pouter, is in fact..
-a SPECIAL category of "beggar": the ones with that 'special-touch'
-of leaving the payer.. feeling, "bad" (as IF their generosity is "louseyness"!)

I am interested [in your true-life] experience; we ALL here thank God
that we do NOT live IN a country -where the first 'seeds' of bribery,
-hence- CORRUPTION are re-sown, [every minute by] the repulsive "tong"
-or tipping-system. (Once a generation passes, "tong" -well, becomes viewed:
as 'normal': EVERYTHING (actually) slows down;it eventually reduces
a countrie's production, even [undermines] Minimum-Wage standards.!
Bosses (begin to assume): "Oh! They glean so MUCH from the TIPPING!'

Since [when were ] you a (wealthy) 'jet-setter'?
"Tong," turns the ordinary unemployed into [ill-mannered] "beggars"
-something we, in Australia will NOT entertain.. It CAN
-after three generations- prevent ANYONE saying,
"thanks, SO much": a pleasant facet-of-life, perhaps [lost..forever]

-as in the U.S.A., even! -You see?

You're not cheap. $4 is too generous. You should only tip him $2 if he carried your bags.
The taxi driver needs a slap. Carry some change next time.

If you'd tip me $4 and pay me $5 I'd drive you around all day darlin'.
He was an ***. Wasn't that a crazy tip or are things like that where you are, I couldn't afford it. I thought 15-20% was fair. so that would be a $1 max tip
