with China, the communists reject religion... although many Chinese do practice a religion, many are also atheists.

as for Japan...

in Japan, the Emporers claimed, and were believed to be, the direct descendant of the Sun Goddess. This was the belief of the Shinto religion, as well as it became the belief of many Buddhists in Japan. the Shinto and Buddhist religions were the main religions in Japan at the time.

when Japan was defeated in WWII many people became disillusioned with religion-- afterall,how can their leader, a descendant of the Sun Goddess, lose?

well, Buddha is NOT considered a god, so Buddhism is actually an "atheistic religion", as strange as that sounds. So, that's about 800 million people right there.
