Not too long ago, after careful appeals to the bible, Christian authorities declared African-Americans to be soul-less. The slavery trade, a trickle at the time, suddenly went into overdrive.

My question is this. After being enslaved, raped, displaced, beaten, killed, maimed and treated as a no-class citizen, why are African-Americans (as a demographic) among the most rabid followers of a religion that their oppressors forced on them?

I mean no disrespect - zero - none - but the notion stumps me. Any ideas?

My only guess is that in spite of everything you said, there were some whites who actually practiced TRUE Christianity and shared it with the blacks. If they were considered soulless by everyone, why would anyone bother telling them about Jesus? I don't think Christianity could be "forced" on anyone.

I cannot speak for African-American Christians. I can only speak for Christians. I hope you get plenty of responses from them on this question.
