I started tanning today at a salon in preparation for a Mexico trip. They advised a 2 hour wait to shower after tanning. Why? They couldn't answer, and I can't believe a tan would 'wash' off. Initially I thought it was only for the fake spray on tans, but they advised against it even for the UV beds. It was also printed in their rules, so it wasn't like the teenager was misinformed. Inquiring minds want to know........

Hi Raunda, you actually don't have to wait 2 hours, but the reason they say that is because that is about how long it takes for the salon tan to actually develop --a regular tan, not a spray tan. They tell you to wait 2 hours so that if your skin starts to show a sunburn you won't further irritate it by scrubbing or something in the shower. A spray tan, you already know about-- you have to wait for the chemical to develop or you'll wash them off. You can shower after a tanning bed session as soon as you want without it effecting your tan, they just say that you shouldn't because they don't want to deal with someone who A) insisted on tanning too long, then B) took a shower right afterwards, and then C) realized that they scrubbed their skin with a pouf and had a sunburn, because that person will likely go in and complain at the tanning salon, claiming that the irritation was just from the lamps. So, don't listen to them....but also...don't go tanning!

I beleive that your body goes through a chemical reaction, where the UV rays react within your body to produce the color of your tan. also yes, like the other person said, getting in the shower and scrubbing with a pouf/loofah and harsh soap will definitly irriate your skin if you have burned. Personally, i know it sounds gross but i love that after tanned smell on my skin.

Happy tanning
