They would probably croak before the system approves it, unless you are on death row.
American justice has this strange rule about only executing healthy people.

Prisoners in the U.S. are covered under a special federal Medical Assistance (Medicaid) program administered by the individual prison systems. The care is comprehensive, but must be medically necessary (i.e. no cosmetic procedures.) If a prisoner truly needs surgery, he or she will receive it. Prescriptions are also covered.
Over the past few decades, there have been complaints regarding the prisoner healthcare system in the U.S. Of greatest concern are: delays prior to receiving emergency and non-emergency care (due to security concerns) and quality of care issues.
Here's a February, 2004, report by the Department of Justice, Office of the Inspector General, regarding these issues: http://www.usdoj.gov/oig/reports/USMS/a0414/3.htm

Prisoners do not need health insurance. There medical care is paid by the government. If an inmate gets sick, they are taken care of. If they need surgery, they get it.
Sounds fair, right?

Funny you ask that - I am an insurance agent and my husband is a correctional officer. Yes, anything that is medically necessary is taken care of while they are incarcerated. However, you probably won't get the best and most experienced doctor around, but you will get medical care. We taxpayers pay for these services for convicted criminals, too.

I really don't approve of prisoners getting free health care !! Just basic first-aid... They're prisoners for a reason, don't reward them !!

Why does it matter how good their insurance is? No matter how good the actual insurance is, taxpayers will be paying for their costs.
