your best best is to get him a gift certificate. $499 is plenty enough to get a great set of irons. the only problem is there are a lot of variables involved in getting the "right" set. its best to let him go get fitted and decide. Any of the leading OEM brands are great, ie, Callaway, Ping, Taylormade, Titlelist. the only way to really know is for him to hit them and find which ones he likes best. and then shop for the bargains. Used clubs can be found very easily and even under your budget.
For example, i bought these brand new for $699. they are on ebay now for $399. not saying to get these, but deals like these are out there.

at first you ought to get outfitted for all your golf equipment. maximum professional shops will try this for loose while you're finding out to purchase from them and places like GolfSmith in fantastic condition you besides. driving force is all very own selection however the Nike is sturdy, TM TourBurner is sturdy. take a glance at a line that hasn't caught on yet right here yet hits super Srixon. they have a advantageous driving force. Irons-stay faraway from Nike they do no longer final. i'm a huge fan of the hot Titleist AP1 line for midhandicappers. For novices Adams has a advantageous set this is a hybrid set. Fairway woods-in case you have a 2 and 3 hybrid you fairly do no longer want fairway woods. Putter Odyssey 2 ball is classic. Scotty Cameron is the terrific yet only commencing out this is probable too lots club for many. ensure you get the splendid length. Bag does not be counted. Ball inspite of the incontrovertible fact that, does. discover a direction with a launch computer screen and take a inspect out distinctive balls. Titleist professional V1 and professional V1x are the usual yet Bridgestone 330 and 330s are super. So are Bridestone e6+. wish it facilitates

I'm sure you can find the TM Rac OS set on Ebay for less than 499USD. If you wanted to go the Ebay route, I would bring up another golf retail page......like Edwin Watts or Golfsmith and compare prices, since you arent familiar with golf equipment. Normally you can get a set for around 60% of retail.

Another idea would be to get him a gift cetificate for a local golf pro shop or sporting good store that carries golf equipment. That way, he can pick what he wants. Its a great gift and he's a lucky friend.

You should give him a gift card to Golf Galaxy, Golfmith or *****. Assuming that your friend knows about golf, he'll be thankful and will know how best to spend the money on golf clubs that he likes.

If you are going to invest in a set, it is in everyone’s best interest that he be fitted for the clubs that HE finds the best. He is the one who will be swinging them so he needs to make the choice. People get very particular about looks at setup. In addition his height and swing shape may benefit from tweaks, changes to length for example, to clubs off of the rack.

I suggest you find the best shop in your area, one that many agree are more interested in fitting your friend with the best clubs for him versus being commission sales folks who will sell anything. Then get him a gift certificate.

Better yet tell him you need to go shopping but take him to his favorite golf shop. Tell him what is gift is (what his budget is). He can get himself fitted and you get to enjoy watching him with his new toys.

Hmm. Well I would recommend that you buy it to make him feel good about himself and then sell it. Golf is pointless. If you don't play golf now don't start. It's a waste of a good walk.
