I have to agree with most of what firestart said. However, small breeds like chis can easily have a sugar drop that can cause a mild seizure of sorts. Not uncommon. More common first thing in morning after not eating all night.

Was this an isolated one time deal? Older or young pup? If happens again keep track of how long and severe for the vet. Try a little sugar on your fingers for it to lick and see if helps. If jaws are clinched tight see if can get something sweet, not chocolate, into corner of mouth and let dissolve. Rub its throat to ease down.
Make sure it can't bump into anything to injure. Talk calm and gently massage the body to comfort. Keep reassuring it is ok. Don't panic and scare it more.

If the sugar helps it stop then you can tell the vet. This would help him know which blood panel to run. Could have just been a mild drop in blood sugars from being hungry or over excited or played too hard. Little dogs have more sensitive system.

Best wishes for your chi

Mine has the gran mal type too. I believe since their is a lot of inner breeding due to their popularity like brother-sister, father-daughter, and mother-son, undesirable defects are inevitable. Since seizures destroy brain cells. They must be controlled. I use Valium on an as needed basis. Some vets use longer acting anti-seizure meds like Tegretol which requires periodic blood level checks. Others prefer other meds. Now there are many causes for seizure like brain tumors and diabetes. Your vet will want basic lab work to rule out other causes. Well, mine has epilepsy and I'm glad I got him fixed. Hope this help and things improve. Note the frequency and length of the seizures.

Parasites are also a common cause of seizures. It's axtually very difficult to get accurate results from lab tests. I give my dogs MSM (not enough to cause diahrrea) and/or GrapeFruit Seed Extract (1 dropper 10 lbs) per day. They were strays, & arrived with tapeworm & who knows what else. One wk later, no more signs of worms, & they began putting on weight without problem. I learned about using MSM & GFSE from a book: "Parasite Menace". It goes into great detail, better than any other I've found.

The following article notes that a fungus mold in the dog's food could trigger a seizure, & gives recommendations:

It can be heredity. It can also be something it ate. Large amounts of chocolate, onions, grapes. not always deadly but Poisonous to dogs, seizures can be a side effect. Did get into a fight, head trauma. Does he have diabetes? Definitely treatable but check with a vet for sure!!! Good luck!!!
