I don't believe that they're trying to fit in so much as managing to adapt on an adult level (one that they're not used to) and that transition is rough as hell!
It's not like they show you how to be financially responsible in high school (paying bills and the penalties that ensue) or how to keep your apt. tidy and run your own household (home-ec doesn't count; they only teach you how to make cinnamon muffins or similar).

Teens can be some of the most interesting people on earth. They need to be comfortable in their own skin before trying to fit in with everyone else. However, fitting in should not include becoming a sheep and following what the majority are doing.

It's right and natural that teens should struggle to fit into society; or, at least, to decide on their place in it.
Speaking as an old woman, however, I must admit to finding their efforts endearing, but I do try not to giggle at them while they are within earshot.
Because teens are far more complex than toddlers, I find them fascinating ...and, there's hardly anything more delightful than a young person learning to be an adult.
