I think there are quite a few reasons that are very complicated. For instance, some go back to that loveless relationship because they feel that they can never get with anyone else. Others are afraid of loneliness and there are those hopefuls who believe that they can reverse things.

I am in one of those right now but i am staying in it because i have been messed around so much and i have had to leave thing that were mine and start ALL OVER WITH NOTHING AND I AM NOT GOING TO DO THAT AGAIN... SO I AM STAYING UNTIL I GET THE THINGS I NEED AND THEN I AM OUT........ i love him but he obviously don't love me ...

Some people stay in the relationship with the hope that things will get better.
Or there may be children involved.

For the kids, as long as you are civil to each other. Then when they grow up and move out, it's party time!!! For security, as long as you are still able to share with each other. There can be stable companionship where there used to be love. To not abandon someone when you know they still need you, that may be another kind of love.

yeah sometimes their is alot behind the answer to that.. and yes i think if their is no love nomore it is time to leave.
