I have a friend whom is Bi-Polar and she constantly (at least every year and a half) has a "hysterical pregnancy". Typically- this "hyterical pregnancy" happens to a woman under severe circumstances- loss of a child late into pregnancy where she is forced to actually go through birthing a stillborn, or in a car accident or physical assault looses a child, the brains defense mechnasim is to not to acknowledge the "loss" and tricks itself into believeing it (the body) is still pregnant. Blood test will show no conclusive supporting facts of the "pregnancy" but the stomach will swell, (usually weight gain) the patient will talk of feeling the baby move and continue on if as though she's pregnant. Some going as far to "go into labor" plan a shower, continue decorating regarldess of family and friends and docs assureing her she is not preggo. I had a psych patient aged 54 that came onto my ward "in labor" looked preggo etc- I called up to L&D and they informed me she was a psych patient long history made short 13 years prior 8 months preggo had crap beaten out her in mugging lost baby still born in c-sec while under general anesthesia- long/short- she never went beyond that date no speaking nothing- all of a sudden "she was in labor" we brought her onto the ward and her psychatrist allowed her "give birth" and after 10 hours of screaming yelling crying (all the things you see normally in an actual birthing process" she pushed one last time and cried I am sorry little boy that mommy couldn't protect you". The date of the birth would have been her sons 13th birthday. It took her that long to deal with death/murder of her fetus. She had no kids before and non after (they had to do a hysto on her due to beating damage). So your mom could have some traumatic event playing out in her mind as these "episodes" happen Is she taking her daily meds, does she go to therapy watch and see if she's forgetting meds- maybe this is when the "preganacy happens". Good luck and stay strong.

She is remembering something traumatic that occured during a prior pregnancy. The trauma happened sometime during the interval. If she crys or is sad about anything while she is in this state, you can help her by asking her to forgive or let go of anger or fears that she may be feeling. If she is bothered by something else that does not fit into this category then I would have to advise further. In this state she will usually be verbalizing what is bothering her. Pray for God to reveal all the things that is bothering her and then watch her start talking about them. The next step is for her to release those things. If she is willing she can just state I forgive, I release the persons or things. If there is resistance, then you need to pray with her step by step if she is willing to hear God help her to release those things.

This is more than you asked for, but I figured I would give you some tested spiritual therapy principles if you have an interest. Most religious people won't give you much help with these things, they usually don't really know how to do this effectively. If you need more information, feel free to contact

it is my understanding that bipolar individuals, when not in control of their condition, tend to develop self-destructive behaviors.

I know it may be kind of awkward for you as her son to consider this, but it is possible that she is having unprotected sex. It sounds like you care a lot about her, and you should try to get her professional treatment if she doesn't already have it.

A good psychotherapist or psychiatrist is good, but a general doctor can prescribe medicine for bipolar disease. And if she already has one or the other, see if you can talk to her treatment provider about this.

Is she diagnosed with bipolar disorder with psychotic features? Its common for individuals with this diagnosis to experience delusional thoughts during their manic or depressive stages. Take her to see her psychiatrist. She may need her meds tweeked a bit. Perhaps a haldol PRN when she is experiencing delusions.

sometimes after women hit menopause they realize it means they can never have a baby of their own so they try to convince themselves it possible. when my grandma had my stepmom she had a c-section and they told her she can never have a kid again and it hit her so hard that she didn't havea period of 9 months because her body was telling her that she was going to have another baby. I don't know if the bi-polar thing is important but she could be really depressed about the menopause.
