What do you have to do when an ear piercing gets infected during the healing process? Do you have to take the earring out, because I wouldn't want to if I didn't have to because then the hole would close up. Would you recommend taking it out? How could you treat the infection?

NO! if a piercing gets infected (especailly if you will be talkign about your rook piercing) DO NOT take it out!! it will make it worse! keep it inl your risks of infection will be greatly minimized if you follow the aftercare correctly! but if you do suspect an infection as a future reference it is excessive swelling pain. tnder, possibly hot and redness, also green or yellow discharge. but if you take it out it will trao the infection and make it worse.. the discharge will have nowhere to go causing a bigger problem. the sea salt soaks help with pain, fight infections and aid in healing. so do these once a day for 15 minutes with non iodized sea salt and wark distilled water. but NEVER take out the jewelry. if you do the infection will be harder ot get rid of since the lymph (discharge) will have nowhere to go. possibly the infection can get inbetween tha layers of your catilage an lead to cartilage collapse permanently disfiguring your ear!@ so leave in the kewelry no matter what. .first get evaluated at the piercer then go to the doctors if they say you need antibiptics. bit NEVER take out the jewelry no matter how bad it is.. this goes for all piercings.

also NEVER EVER use rubbing alcohol, hydrogen peroxide or and ointments liek neosporin on a piercing! these are all extrememly harmful it will dry out. kill the good tissues and bacteria part of healign possibly leading to more scarring. they will irritate the piercing. ointments will trap the discharge from escaping causing an infection. nto to mention attract dirt and other dbris and draw it into the piercing. keep away from all these!they are extreemmly bad for any piercing they will only do more harm than good in the long run trust me! your piercer will tell you all ab otu this if you ask him.her..

strictly stick to a mild antibacterial soap like dial, the SEA SALT SOAKS (most important) and an aftercare pierce solution that they shoudl supply you with!

good luck!

I have my ears pierced and they were infected and I did not take the earrings out. Do not take the earrings out because the hole will close up. They will be sore if they are not completely well. I used a Q tip with perioxide on it and put the peroxide on the piercing. It is probably going to hurt if your ears are not completely well. I did mine about every 30 minutes. It will clear up the infection.

DO NOT USE ALCOHOL...it dries the piercing out, and makes it flake. It also depends where it is. I used Bactine...because it's an antiseptic that also numbs. If you have discomfort it will numb it briefly. Make sure your hands are clean when you touch it. You can leave it for a little and use Bactine...but if it doesnt clear up, you need to go to a piercing shop and get advice. Furthermore...it there are hard masses on the piercing, definitely take it out, it could be kelloid.

Overall, I consulted my piercer when I had an issue.

You need to take out the earring. Use antibiotic ointment on the ear after washing it with soap and water and applying alcohol. This is the safest course to take.
Later, long after it heals, try again with a hypoallergenic stud.
