i am 70 years old and am astonished at the number of questions from illiterate people.?

are they all stupid or just lazy.why can't they spell simple words.

Good Question. I think that its a combination of the above.
It seems to me that people spend to much time watching TV and playing computer games and not enough time reading.
Also people just dont care anymore .
When i was a child we did not have a TV for many years and it was during this time that i learned to really appreciate books, both fiction and non-fiction.
Also i dont think that schools do a proper job anymore and that thousands of children are slipping through school when they are not literate.

Welcome to the world of cyber speak language. Its all done in short hand spelling and people have a hard time transferring back and forth to standard English. I have to teach my college students that there is a standard professional English that they need to use, that spellings such as cuz, b4, ty, etc. etc. will not cut it in the global corporate market. They see no need to worry about spelling or grammar when they are online.

Well, some people simply don't know how to correctly spell or use the convenient spell checker. Others just do not care if they make a spelling error.

Well, I think it's basically because of a failure of today's educational system. Teachers are encouraged to "pass" the students on to the next level, regardless of their proficiency in the English language. It's got to be a real headache for teachers at the college level who are handed papers done by students who cannot read or write well.
