My banana plant and cannas have been damaged by unusually cold weather this winter causing their leaves to turn brown and wilt. I have since covered the plants with sheets to prevent further damage. In the meantime, should I cut the leaves that have turned brown (almost all) or leave them until it warms up?

I don't know where you are from, but I am from a mild part of Canada, and my bananas (japanese fiber banana) come back from the ground even if the leaves/stalks have died. Cannas however are extremely tender and they do not survive outside for me. I have to dig them up at first frost. Best way to tell if yours are living is to dig some tuber/root and if it is yellow and meaty, then it will be okay. If it is all brown or black, then you have lost them.

Well I am lucky enough to have a warmed greenhouse for my plants, but it is not air tight and some cold air gets in and my hibiscus has leaves that turned brown...

You can cut both of these plants back to the stump and they'll re-sprout in the spring. Leave about a foot or two for the banana and a couple of inches for the Cannas. The banana will sprout right out of the center of the stump, and the cannas will send up a new shoot.
I had both of these plants in texas and I had to cut them back each winter.
Good Luck!

The brown leafs are dead. They will never recoup. Eventually they will rot off.
