we have a 9 month old femal puppy. she is very loveable and smart and obedient, and is a lab cross w/ pitt. I have heard horror stories about pitt bulls and am afraid as she gets older she will become aggressive like a pittbull. Is it a trait of that breed, or can I breathe a sigh of relief?

No, pit bulls are Not naturally aggressive dogs. Aggressive dogs are made, not born. Pit bulls are naturally Sweet and loving dogs. And those horror stories you hear are just that, they are horror stories. Yes, pit bulls can attack, but so can any other dog breed. What they don't mention in the news is that the dogs who attacked are usually provoked, defending property, chained in their backyard, or had very bad irrisponsible owners who either abuse their dog, or train it to be aggressive. The best thing to do is reasearch the breed on your own, and forget about all those pit bull myths. EVERY dog is an individual, and if your little girl is sweet and lovable then it really doesn't matter what breed she is. As long as you give her lots of love and affection, make sure to take her to obedience classes, and make sure she is well socialized, she will remain a lovable sweet girl.

I have had a lot of experience with rescued pit and pit mixes. I also have had a lot of experience with pit and pit/mixes that have been owned and loved from the time they were born.
First rule of thumb....in most cases, there is really no such thing as a "bad" breed...just bad owners. There are breeds that can have a predisposition to have a shorter tolerance for negative treatment. Mini Dachshunds and German Shepards are the highest "fear biters" Chihuahuas, pits, and rotts are known to be aggressive....but actually, it has A LOT to do with how the dog is raised and treated. I LOVE Doxies, Chihuahuas, Rotts, and Pitts...they are all very good dogs. So rest assured, just because your dogs have Pitt in them does not mean they are going to just "turn" on you one day. I have to say, there is no such thing as a dog that "turns" mean...they are made mean, whether it is through neglect or abuse. Love your babies and they will love u back!

No, if a dog is raised right it will be a good pet. However, some breeds have a more aggressive nature. Pitt bulls, Rottweilers and the like don't always know thier own strength. These breeds are not recommended for families with young children, who tend to bring out their aggressive playful nature. Otherwise she should be fine.

You're going to have a very unique and lovable dog. Unless specifically trained, pittbull type dogs are naturally dog aggressive but not people aggressive. To deal with the dog aggression, they have to be VERY well trained on lead (she must learn to listen to you no matter what) and very often pitt type dogs need to wear a soft muzzle just to make sure nothing happens.

"Pitts" are sweet and sociable dogs, as long as they are well trained and understand what's expected of them. As long as you're training her in obedience and enforce those rules, the pittbull part of her will do just fine. Labrador dogs are known for being affectionate, sweet lovable dogs. They're also pretty energetic.

It's hard to say how her personality will turn out since she is still a pup but in general, good training, enforced every day will keep her sweet and lovable. Most dogs (there are a few exceptions to this rule) are as much a product of their training as of their nature. So take her to obedience classes (with a muzzle, even if you trust her), love her, and enjoy her. She sounds like a doll.

Pitts have a tendency to be aggressive, but it can also depend on her environment and the type of love she recieves. Just like with any dog. Having the Lab in her is definately a plus. Labs are known to be wonderful family pets. I have a lab I rescued-fantastic dog! My friend has a Lab/Pitt and he is so sweet. Obedience training is a must! Best of luck!

No, it does not automatically mean that it will be mean or aggressive. Although historically some pitbulls have been bred to fight or be used as guard dogs, this is no longer typical. The temperaments of both parent dogs will have a large roll in how your puppy will act and how it will grow up. Also, how you train and socialize your dog will also effect its temperament. I have too heard many horror stories about pitbulls turning, however, I have also heard these stories about friendly family dogs, like golden retrievers. My point mainly is that its not the breed of dog, its how you raise it and train it. Good luck!

We also have the same breed dog. I have never noticed any aggressive behavior in her. We have 2 children 10 and 8 and she is with 3 other dogs. She is just sweet. Although I admit I do watch her closer then the others. We have had her over a year.

All pit bulls are not aggressive. It depends on how they are raised. I have two family members who have had pit bulls and they were very sweet dogs, good with adults and children. Since so many jerks raise pit bulls and train them to fight, be certain that you do not adopt any puppy or adult dog that has been trained to fight. They might be fine with adults but aggressive with other animals and children. Labs are currently the most popular dog in the country and are known as great family pets.

I believe that peole stereotype pit bulls as being mean. Its all about the owner. My best friend has a full blooded pit and its loving and wonderful. Show it love and compassion with discipline and there is no reason why they cant be a great dog. Every dog has some what of aggression they just have to be taught not to.

One,Two..........Breath...........Repeat...One, Two..........well, you get the idea.

I was given a beautiful brindle pitbull 5 years ago when she was only 5 weeks old. This dog is the ultimate in loving, gentle as well as obidient and intelligent! I am thankfull for the heaven above for bringing me my pit.

Do not fear what you see and hear in the media. A small dog is just as likely to be mean and aggressive as any pitbull. Raise your pet with love, attention and assertive discipline (wih proper socialization of course!) and you will reap the joy of man's best friend for a very long time.

If you DO happen to notice any sign of aggression in your dog, please don't hesitate to take the pet to your vet for an examination and further evaluation/treatment. Otherwise, relax, enjoy and for heaven's sake, BREATH a sigh of relief!!
