The United States government uses the system of "pay as you go". The money taken from your check goes to fund all government operations from the military to the janitorial service in your local post office. Now for the money that is taken out of your check.

So under the listing of most paychecks:

Federal Income Tax: The federal government
State Income Tax: State government (Capitols, State Park)
County Income Tax: County Roads and government
City Income Tax: Wastewater, Facilities
School Tax: Funds the local school district
Social Security Tax: Goes into the social security "lockbox" to be used when you turn 65 or older
Medicare Tax: Pays for the Medicare Tax boards.

Some states, cities, and counties will not have all of the above taxes, but the main thing to remain is that the preceding word in front of the Tax is what it funds.
