Maggots are actually still used in the medical community. When there is much damage tissue, like with a severe burn, maggots will be place on the area to consume and get rid of the tissue that is no longer of any use and pose a health risk to the patient. This is also one of there purposes in Nature. They will help eat old, rotting carcasses in the wild which in turns helps prevents the spread of disease.

Maggots are essential to the cycle of life. As you may or may not know, maggots are the larvae of flys. They tippically (depending upon breed) help stop the spread of disease by devouring dead tissues and other organic waste products. Some maggots however will feed on live tissues and therefore pretty much suck. Have a nice day!

The role of recycler. Maggots is very efficient in cleaning up the dead carcasses.

Also, there is proven therapy that wounds heals faster and better when maggots are put on the wounds and eat up dead skin.
Of course, those maggots are raised in clean and sterile environment before they are used on patients.

Maggots eat dead tissue. They can even be used to eat dead tissue in LIVING people. As in when a limb is gangrenous. They will eat the dead tissue and leave the living tissue to heal. Cool huh? In WW1 AND WWII, medics carried live maggots with them in the field to help save lives in just this manner. Hospitals still use today.

They do the same thing with dead animals helpling to keep the earth clean of decaying dead aminals.

They clean up whats left over and tidy up after us. If you have certain health problems the Doctors will put sterilized maggots on the wound to clean it so it can heal.
