I am a former vet and we had people call in asking all the time!
My responce to them is the reason is cause they are restlace at night. Here are somethings you might consider to do before you go to bed at night.
So what you do is before you go to bed at night be sure your dog is in the house. If you don't mind have your dog on your bed and she/he might sleep with you if you wake up and your dog is howling call your dog in the hous and pet him/her.It worked with my dog and when I got up to pet her I took to bed with me and she never howled again!

the dog is probably bored. if you haven't done so get the dog spayed or neutered. unspayed or uneutered dogs should never be left alone outside at night. especially the males. they are ready to breed at any moment. the dog is probably bored. do you provide regular exercise and mental stimulation? these are very active and intelligent dogs. they thrive on being part of the family and probably doesn't like being away from you. you need to walk the dog at least twice daily and provide some sort of mental stimulation during the day. either with play or get the dog into a training class. bored dogs often display other behaviors, such as constant barking, digging, chewing and getting out of the fence and any of these can cause harm to your dog. howling is used by wild dogs to call other members of the pack to them or to locate the pack. this is an instinct carried over into the domesticated dogs we see today. your dog is looking for his pack (which is you). bring him in if you can, or find a way to make him more secure you are nearby.

Domestic dogs that howl, especially those that howl excessively are usually doing this because they are bored and lonely. Getting extra toys, and giving your dog more attention and exercise will help to stimulate your dog and reduce excessive howling. If you make your dog sleep outside all night, it's no wonder the dog howls a lot. Bring the dog inside!

There may be another dog howling, and you cannot hear it. Dogs can hear 12 times better than we can. The howl is a pack trait. It is a call that lets other dogs know that there is something going on, and they should all be in on it.

My dogs hear the dog a few blocks away, and they howl in response.

i don't know why dogs even howl. some dogs howl for stupid reasons. i live next door to a house with 4 big dogs. and everytime they hear a police siren, they always howl for some reason. so your dog could be howling over something that's not really worth you to worry about.

Is it inside or outside? You should let him/her inside if it is at all cold, or if there is not freedom/space and fresh water and food at all times..
But, if it is outside, maybe it is sad from being away from others. Dogs are pack animals and want companionship, and they deserve it too. They deserve the best treatment you can possibly give.

dogs have extra ordinary hearing. their hearing picks up things that humans cant. so she might hear something that you cant.that is what my moms dogs do. they can hear my dad coming home when he is a quarter of a mile away.to stop this, tell him to shush, and make a noise just close enough to him to scare him. do this repaetedly and with consistency, with rewards for good behavior, and he will soon stop thehowling

could be that he is lonely and trying to get attention, give him a blanket with your scent on it and place a ticking clock near his sleep area this will sound like a heartbeat to him, also make sure that he is getting plenty of exercise during the day, and not sleeping it away.
