I'm not even pregnant yet, just doing some family planning. With my first baby I barely made it to the hospital in time and I wouldn't have gotten there at all if my husband hadn't dragged me out of the shower and put me in the car. I would love to have a home birth the next time around. He's active duty army and we have tricare prime. Does anyone have any experience with this? Will tricare pay for a midwife, as well as midwife assistant, sterile tools, etc? We will be moving to Alabama by that time if that makes any difference. Thanks for your help!!

No I don't believe they will . No they won't I asked these questions before. They pay for deliveries in their Military hospitals or other facilities ran by them. Good luck. Call them and double check.

My husband is AF, and we have Tricare prime as well. If you are out of area and have to have the child or your self seen by a Dr while visiting your family you will have to pay, ER is different and covered though!

They are so frickin picky.

Good luck in finding that out. My hubby won't let me do a home birth. I think that they do cover going to a midwife. I talk him into letting me do it at a birthing center and when I went to look for a birthing center I found out that there were literally none in the area.

But I believe they do cover midwives, although it might be a chore finding a midwife that takes tricare or understands how to processes the insurance for tricare( I don't know how many times I've had to explain that they run the insurance under my hubby's SSN only to get letters in the mail saying that I have outstanding dues I really can't wait till we move to a base that has doctors on it that my son and I can go to)

I googled midwife and tricare and got a few good links. It says they will cover a midwife and homebirth. I would still ask a tricare professional. I actually found this discussion because I was looking for the same information myself. I'm pregnant with our 2nd, husband's active Army and I would love to have the birth be more natural. The 3rd link has good info from a woman who just did a HB with Tricare.

I have tricare prime as well and I have no idea. I would call tricare and see what they will and will not cover. I go to a hospital off base in the city that I live in and I was never given any other options but you can always ask.

I don't think tricare will pay for this. I know my husband is active airforce.. and just to be able to be seen off base we had to do copay b/c their was space available on base. I would call tricare and ask around though. But I am pretty sure they won't do it. I can't even go and visit family with my husband going to be deployed soon tricare told me if i wanted to visit my relatives while he was deployed I would have to pay for any shots or any time that I had to take my kids in for a checkup... so not sure but i would definitely call tricare and ask.. never hurts

NO! They may okay to cover the midwife but, not for home birth. You could pay the cost out of pocket for that...which can be anywhere from 2K to 5K. Good luck. Try a birthing center.

normally midwives work on a sliding scale, meaning that they charge you according to how much you can afford. most insurance doesnt pay for home births because they think it to be a risky investment, wich is total b.s to me. i was born at home and my mother is a midwife, i have been exposed to midwifery litteraly since birth

you're a military spouse, they grant you with lots, and your husband is providing lots for his us of a. So what once you should ask permission? interior the large image, what's the large deal? basically commence asking the right human beings on base.
