my dog, a 9 pound two-year old dug up my candy bag while we were out eating. He found those big hershey's milk chocolate bar, took it to the living room and, from what i think, carved it with his teeth and ate what he carved. He of course didnt eat all of it, when we got home after like an hour or so, there was still a big chocolate bar with a semi-deep carved lump in the middle. He usually greets us at the door excitedly, he reacted the same, everything seems normal, I'm not sure if it's just because I just got home 30 minutes ago, or something will happen later. So i want to ask what should I do? I dont plan on calling the vet or anyone, I just want to know if i should call the vet, or if there is anything i can do at home. I immediately asked and did some research when i got home just now. I dont know what will happen later. So please please help me!!

Unfortunately I am a semi-pro at this. I have a Chihuahua who has done this a few times. First of all dogs can smell chocolate a mile away. Once they taste it, it is like an addiction. My dog actually climbed on top of my computer stand hutch to get at on Hershey bar!!
Milk choc. is not as nearly poisonous as dark/semi-sweet chocolate because it contains less alkaloids, theobromine and caffeine. Anyways, mix one part peroxide with one part water and get it into the dog. It will cause him to vomit up the stomach contents. Including the peroxide. I read this in my Dog first aid book I keep close by, and my vet approves of it. If you take him to the vet they will do the same thing and/or use activated charcoal. A dog usually doesn't starts to break down chocolate within 4 hours, so this gives you a 4 hour window. By the way Snoopy is fine, but totally hates the peroxide bottle. You can try mustard seed too, I haven't had as good results with it though. Good luck!!

Hi lingling c:
Somehow folks got the notion that chocolate (remember, there are an infinite number of types and varieties) when eaten by pets is like a death head mushroom. Wrong!!!
Your dog, at 2 yrs and 9 lbs. is no longer a puppy. It is a mature, and I sense a well kept animal. He probably had a great time tearing apart the wrapping, even chowing it down before eating most of the great chocolate treat therein. Let him purrrrr.
Nah, don't call or take him to a vet. Save the bucks. He may puke a bit , but that's par for the course. You could expect some loose bowel stuff. The amount of chocolate you advised he ingested is way below the scale of being deadly for a small dog of his size.
I'm no vet, however, I've had man's best friend about me for a long, long time.

dlondo99- if you dont know what your talking about, dont answer a question. Peroxide is the safe and approved method for making a dog vomit. It is what any vet would tell you to use. the appropriate doseage is 1 Tbsp per 20 lbs of body weight, you can give up to 3 doses, waiting 20 mins between each dose. For a 10lb dog it would take 8oz of milk choc, 3oz of semi sweet, and 1.5oz of dark to be a toxic overdoseage. Comare this to a 75lb dog (76oz, 25oz and 8.5oz respectively) and you will see the difference weight has in this situation. These are just the toxic doses, smaller doses will still cause vomiting and diarrhea, which may need medical attention depending on how severe it is.

I once had a similar situation with my dog. I had left out a kit-kat bar at his eye level and he ate it when we weren't home. He was a lot larger than your dog, however, so I'm not sure if size matters in the situation or not. The first thing that I did when this happened was calling the poison control center. They asked me various questions about my dog, pertaining to his weight, breed, amount of choc. consumed, etc. Basically, they talked to me for 5 minutes before they told me my dog was fine, and charged a decent chump of change on my credit card to hear he was ok. From what I've heard, chocolate is indeed poisonous to dogs, but usually only when consumed in large quantities or frequently. Just to play it safe, call a 24hr vet in your area and speak to someone over the phone. If they feel your pet is in any real danger I'm sure they will have you bring it in and handle it from there.

I'm sure he's fine. When I was in high school my parents dog ate 9 of those big $2 candy bars that you sell for clubs and she survived just fine....milk chocolate effects dogs less then dark chocolate or cocoa. My dog was a cocker spaniel so she wasn't that large. If she starts vomiting or having really bad diarrhea then get him to the vet...but most likely he will be okay.

It would take two to three candybars (1oz milk choc size) to harm a 10 lb dog. (Via research on net).
My personal experience is that most dogs are fine for the most part. Our family poodle was only 7 lbs full grown, and she ate half a box of the fancy dark chocolate candies.
I would suggest that you watch your dog carefully for the next few hours. If he/she throws up - that's ok. The pup should just end up with a bad hangover. Best of luck to you and your pup.

I would keep a close watch on your dog, but he should be OK. If you are truly scared pour a half cap full of hydrogen peroxide down his throat. Give it 5 minutes and he will puke up everything. I know this from personal experience. My dog ate an entire bag of M&M's and I had to do that per the vet.

Get him to the vet. Be concerned, but I had a Dalmation that ate a whole basket of Easter candy while we were at church that morning, she really didn't have any problems after she threw up a couple times.
