I know most of the standard codes but am trying to get a few details about things like depth of footings. In MI here it is at least 42" Also was wondering if there are any other things to be aware of like drainge, radon gas, termite protection etc.

Most communities have adopted the International Residential Code (IRC), with tailoring for local conditions. You can buy the IRC from Amazon.com and a number of other online sources. The local building department should also be able to help you. It has been my experience that if you admit your ignorance, the inspector will be more than glad to demonstrate his knowledge of the subject.

The footing should always be deeper than the frost line. That is probably why it is 42" in Michigan. Although you may not need as deep a footing in Tennessee, it may pay to consult with a soils engineer.
