I am not versed in alternative treatments, but I found an article that explains different treatments that might be of help to you. Scroll down to the middle of the article. "Complementary and Alternative Medicines" gives a little more insight than I am able to.
A cure is certainly not going to be found by shocking one's brain, but medication, therapy and perhaps an alternative treatment will help you learn how to cope with anxiety.

All the best to you. I hope you find what you are looking for.

Mikey this may not be your preffered answer but it is so true so I'm gonna say it. If you build up your self worth, you may see significant improvements and I do mean significant! Are you involved in any social groups at the moment even if to a small degree? Unfortunately with social phobia, repeated exposure doesn't seem to prove as therapeutic until you have built up the self worth and that alone is what will help you advance. I'd start small with something that PHYSICALLY makes you feel good, if you have the means. A new hairstyle perhaps, a new pair of jeans and then think about taking a class ( I don't know how old you are) where participation will be minimal and student quantity will be low. Sign language classes are great even if you aren't into the actual sign language. Putting yourself in a situation where your input seems valuable and you feel needed will boost your self esteem. How about volunteering to read to small groups of children at the hospital or library.

yest you can have electorconvulsive therapy but it should be the last resort and their is memory loss as one of the main side effects. I think a better way to cure social phobia is exposure. The more you stay away from social situations the more anxious you will be about them. Its not easy at first but as positive experiences with others build up your anxiety lessens. You must fake it until you make it. Although I think its rather normal for everyone to worry/experience social phobia from time to time, excessive worry/social phobia may beed to be treated by meds or cognitive behavior therapy. There are some good books out there on the subject. One book that I like is triumph over shyness: conquering shyness and social anxiety. It helped me.

What's wrong with therapy? It's not like you have to lie on a couch and talk with a Freudian about your childhood for years on end. Find yourself a good cognitive behavioural therapist. You should notice improvement after a few weeks and with this kind you don't have to talk about your childhood. Infact, you don't have to talk that much! You learn.

You do not want ECT! That's just crazy talk.
