I don't think it is supposed to be that salty...I'm not a snob but there are some things I do not trust a mix for...pesto is one of them
If I'm in a hurry, I just buy Classico Pesto in a jar which is pretty good on short notice...
When I want homemade pesto I just whir this mixture up in the food processor or Tupperware food chopper and instanty, you have pesto
3 cups fresh basil leaves
1 1/2 cups chopped walnuts or pine nuts, more authentic with pine nuts but walnuts work fine
4 cloves garlic, peeled (more or less)
1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese (not the Kraft kind, the real stuff)
1 cup olive oil
sea salt and cracked black pepper to taste
In a food processor, blend together basil leaves, nuts, garlic, and cheese. Pour in oil slowly while still mixing. Stir in salt and pepper.

No, it should not be salty, however, I've never had pesto that you had to add water to. The salt was added as a preservative.
To make it from scratch is very simple:
2 cups of packed fresh basil
Extra virgin olive oil
1/2 cup of Parmesan cheese
1/2 cup of pine nuts
Pack the basil in a blender and chop.
Drizzle olive oil, until you get the consistency you want
Add the cheese and pine nuts

Mmmm...good stuff. I have a recipe that my boyfriend absolutely LOVES. 1 package Gnocchi 2 Boneless chicken breasts Sun-dried tomatos Garlic Bread Using a Sautee pan cook some cut up chicken ( I use 2 breasts) At the same time boil your water for the Gnocchi, and cook according to the box, usually after the water boils you cook them for 4 minutes. When the chicken is done add the pesto and sundried tomatos and let cook until sauce is hot. When the Gnocchi is done drain the water and add the chicken pesto mixture to the gnocchi, I let it cook for just a minute together. Then serve it with some garlic bread on the side. Deliciousioso!

It definitely shouldn't be that salty. It's best to make it yourself (and it's easy!), but if you have to buy it pre-made look for the Olivieri brand in the fresh pasta section at the supermarket. Their pesto is excellent (very authentic, and I would know since I used to live in the region of Italy where pesto is from) AND you can freeze whatever you don't use!

Pesto sauce is ok pre-made, so you may have just gotten a bad batch. To really taste it you need to try it homemade. Try a good restaurant or make it yourself, it is so quick and easy, and SO good.

It is like a concentrate, personally, I prefer it as a bread stick dip or french bread dip, it's to strong for my liking, like a pizza sauce.
