Ordinary primer will not work and will allow additonal staining to permeate through should it not be done spreading. Instead use a product called Kilz (latex based) available in 5 gallon buckets at any home store or decorating store. Kilz covers this type of stain as well as masking odors on subfloors due to pet's urinating. It is the same product used by professional smoke restoration companies when a fire has occured. I use Kilz every time I paint a room or floor that has not been properly primered before. So the 5 gallon bucket will not go to waste. This product covered very nicely the marker and lipstick paintings my daughter did in her room as a three year old.

If the stain got bigger and then stopped, it might mean that something behind the wall was leaking and has since quit. If your wall is of sheetrock(drywall) you may consider cutting a piece out to see what the cause of the leak was. You can always patch the hole. As for covering the stain, there is a product called "Kilz" which is good at covering up any marks, stains, spots, and anything else that is there and you can't scrub off.

Not knowing what caused the stain would worry me. Was there a leak between the walls? Who knows what toxic crud is growing under there. Maybe a bees nest and now possible carpenter ants are eating out the food...........oh the nightmare I can spin.

But to answer your question, if just washing the wall won't eliminate it, you can paint over it with Kilz.

there is a priming product called Kilz that is supposed to cover most stains before painting> I have used it for various things, and sometimes it takes a few coats, but it does seem to cover them.

Use Kilz in a spray can, that will cover any stain.

ummmmmmm instead of covering it why not try and find out what it is?

WHat if it was a water leak and you have some toxic mold growing that will cause you health problems..could kill you! Seriously u could have mold growing on the insides of your wall...that would freak me out
