There are aspects that are fun, like most jobs. There are parts that are very rewarding, especially if you are good at your job. Being good means listening a lot to the people who are good at their job, whether they out rank you, or you outrank them, esp your Chiefs and Petty Officers. It is a great job for people who work well as a team, are eager to learn, but know when to take charge of a situation. An officer is expected to know the job of his people and employ them in the most effective way. His Chiefs and senior PO's are the subject matter experts and they, as well as the lower PO's do most of the work, and tell you when you are f'd up, and if they like you, help you so you don't look stupid next time. Plus, the enlisted guys get to do most of what people think as "fun"- shooting guns, driving the small boats, make the big gun bark, etc. An officer gets a limited exposure to these aspects. The enlisted generally have to do a lot of the tedious work that make ship get from point a to b and kill the bad guys. Officers don't get as dirty, but have to go to a lot of meetings, and (should) stay later than the Sailors and make sure they have everything they need to be successful. Overall, I have had a blast, but it is not for everyone. If you like going out to sea and living at your work place, this is a fun job.

I have been both enlisted and an officer in my Air Force career. It is a very rewarding career, knowing you have so much responsibility in your hands. It is definitely challenging, but it's "do-able" provided you keep your head on straight, and you are doing it for the right reasons. When people ask me what I do, I don't tell them I am an F-16 pilot, I tell them I am an Air Force officer. There are high highs and low lows. You'll make more money elsewhere, have a more stable lifestyle elsewhere, and be able to work 9-5 elsewhere...but you may never get to say that you were entrusted by a sitting President to do your job, and to do it well (Sect 3, US Constitution).

Hope it helps, good luck

Depends on the Community. SWO..Long hours in port, longer hours underway. Aviation: long hours training, very stringent requirements. IWO/INTEL/IP: long hours cooped up in small dark rooms..on shore and at sea. Supply: paperwork, paperwork, and more paperwork. METOC: very undermanned at the moment, you could be overworked.

It will be fun if you enjoy the work, the command climate and have competant Chiefs and LPOs. It won't be fun if you don't get your Quals done in a timely manner or iof you walk around all arrogant just because you are weraing a butterbar.

My dad is a Major and two of my brothers also have high ranks. Fun is not the correct word. It is a very serious job that requires to be mature.

...Fun? I guess it can be, if you enjoy your job and don't act all superior to your chiefs. It'll be more fun if you listen to your chiefs.
