Why is one always, the other labled as past?

Most former drug users continue to label themselves as an "addict" albeit a recovering addict. Most counselors who operate on the disease model of addiction would argue that if someone is referring to themselves as an ex-user, then they are in denial and at a high risk of relapse.

Just because someone says that they are an ex-user isn't saying that they are not still an addict-they are saying that they are an addict that is not now a user of the drug.

They are both often labeled as the past, it depends on who says it. The Drug ed. guys always say once a user, always a user, for all drugs.

actually its recovering alcoholic and recovering addict .
when you say user it can mean they used the drug but weren't addicted.

But you are right about the stigma about always being an alcoholic why can't it be ex-drinker or retired from drinking?????

People in AA still call themselves alcoholics, people in NA still call themselves addicts, it's all part of the 12step mind set.

They are taught in the program that they never get over it, that they must ask God for a daily reprieve from their "disease". Seriously. They also claim that you must turn your will and your life over to God because no one can possibly stop on their own.

They also claim they are "spiritual, not religious", even though they pray during meetings and call for daily prayer:

to me if you actually stop than you are no longer what you were.
alcholic is no longer an alcoholic.
druggie is no longer a druggie.

people don't look at drugs as a disease but alcoholism is. They are both diseases in my opinion.

Both are not good.

Great question. I would think they are the same. Both are addiction problems. But maybe it's because alcohol is legal and drugs aren't? I dunno.
