If you beleive in evolution, then what came first was the egg. The parent of the first chicken was not a chicken, it was a devolved version of the chicken. Therefore, a pre-chicken had the egg which contained the first chicken which was then hatched and become the first chicken.
If you beleive God created all of the creatures of the earth, water, and air, then the chicken came first.

I will say egg because through evolution process some other animal that might evolved and laid an egg that would have become a chicken.
Fire Kisser's response intrigues me. Does this mean that God laid an egg that would hatch into a chicken?

okay well when i was six i said chicken. because you know how people are like god creates things? well i envisioned that creation as being god dropping his creations on the earth and if he dropped an egg on the ground it would break but if you drop a chicken it would be like fine. uhh, thats sixyearolds logic there. but yeah, i'll go with chicken.
