well, I posted earlier this week about a yellow '72 VW Beetle, and what I should do.
Since then, I have researched and researched on the internet for different beetles in my driving range, and have found a couple.
I considered ebay first, but I realized I could never talk my family into an ebay car, since we cant see if before we buy, and we cant drive it to make sure it works okay...
anywho. I found this car about 150 miles away in a town we visit regularly, and I would absolutely love to buy it.
According to the advertisement:
" same owner since 1988; approximately 113,000 miles on the body; 5,500 miles on the rebuilt engine; keep stored - no rust; new tires; beaded wheels; completely rebuilt from the engine, body pan to the top! Nice Car! MUST SEE!"
Of course,t here was other info, but that was the sellers comments...
Also:
history is: ·
Accident Free
· Clean
· Garage Kept
· Non Smoker

Its all for about $5000, which I can do. What do you think?

I know plenty of people that have beetle convertables and drive them daily, so ur comment of them being a collector is up to the buyer.
I think a car is useless if its not used for what it was made for.
Its like having something special to you, you can hide it, and keep it forever, yet forget about it, or use it, and enjoy it...

I also dont mind getting my hands dirty for a beetle... Dont judge me because Im a girl, i have gotten alot of that on this site lately, and i dont appreciate it.
Im asking your advice on whether or not I should look more into it, not a criticism on my incapabilities to take care of one...
Im responsible, and I have been a lover of beetles since I knew what a car was...
thank you to all the positive responses.

I wonder what plans you have for it, how old you are, what the weather is like there, do you have covered parking, and your plans for the future?
VW bugs are great transportation cars, easy to keep running, and parts are cheap. $5000.00--$6500.00 for a conv. in good condition and this age is a fair price.
I run into so many of these cars that are no longer worth saving because their owners lose interest. They go off to college, military, have kids, move to where they need air conditioning or better heating, park where the sun rots the top, rain warps the bows, beach rusts the body, ect-------------- Think ahead 5 years--is this the car you need and want. hate to see a almost 40 year old car that has been taken care of go to junk.
Most VW engines are good for about 45,000 miles, 65,000 if you add a remote oil filter (most only have a screen in the oil pan at this age), but a complete engine can be purchased for $799.00 I've owned 4 bugs over the years including a 68 convertible. fun little cars that hold their value as long as you don't molest it----leave it original
So if this is the the type of car you want, in the condition you want--buy it, or at least look at it. The price is more than fair, easy and cheap to repair and up-keep. Also, a great daily driver and transportation with apeal.

Beetles have widespread appeal and are, for the most part, good investments and soundly built cars. I'm not the best one to advise on whether or not this is a good deal or a lemon, but would strongly recommend getting a full mechanical inspection. Consider the few bucks that you'll spend here an investment.

actually vws are warm cars as long as u have the heat exchangers and they are wired full open or the cables still work properly, it is a common problem for the heat in the rear holes under the back seat to melt anything plastic, shoes, cd cases, etc. as for the windshield fogging make sure to treat the inside with anti fog and the outside with rainX, they used to sell special lexan pieces that went over the defrosters on the lower corners of the windshield, im sure u could make sum easily, then find a blower fan that makes the air flow better to the defrosters, usually all the ducting is rotted or removed, so it cant work at all if it dont get there... also the front floor vents can be blocked with stainless tape, tinfoil, however u can as long as it wont melt from the heat and that will increase sum of the pressure to the front defroster vents...

If this is what you want I would go look at it. It is good that the rebuilt engine has 5,500 miles on it, that tells us that the rebuild was ok. Just be aware that sometimes it is hard to find someone to work on a car that old, and they may be a little pricey at times and hard to get parts. You could easily put another 100,000 miles on that engine. Good Luck.

A 68 Bug Convertible should be considered a collector car and not a daily driver. If your looking for a daily driver I would say no.

If your buying an old beetle you should be ready to take care of it daily. If your not into getting your hands dirty then buy something newer.
