And people wonder why I make fun of them when they tell me Christianity is the one true source of morality and hope in this world.

I actually had to look this one up, as my bible knowledge is a little rusty. I had read something about this years ago after sunday school when they were talking about directions given to moses from god. It also states that you may purchase the children of foreigners and they may be passed on to your own children as permanant slaves, but the people of Israel shall not be treated as such.
Aparently, god goes on to tell moses, that if these rules are followed (all of them, not just this one) that there will be plenty of rain and crops and no one will go hungry and there will be peace and sleep without fear.
I think that you have to take this in context during the time it was written, when slavery was not only common, but expected if you could not afford to live or eat. I'm not saying it was something you wanted you or your children involved in, but that it was a common occurance and many children were sold because the family could not support them. There were also many different levels and types of slavery.
In my younger years, before I was pagan, I read the bible in full many times. I came to odds with people who took literal interpretations of the "word". I think it is a historical piece of literature, with good and bad points. The ten commandments are probably a good idea. Well, most of them.
I do believe this passage has been used by white supremicists and your run of the mill racists to justify the ownership of african americans in our past, in their so - called worship of christ.
I think your question, although humorous, has a point. When people say, "they live by the bible" I often wonder if they have ever really read the whole thing, or studdied some of the darker sides. I had a professor in college trace jesus' lineage back the the "whore of babylon". That upset people quite a bit. Why? I'll never know.

Are you a descendant of Israel? And do you live in a society that allows slavery? However, if you were in Israel 3500 years ago, you would know about the slavery laws and the Year of Jubilee.
Lev 25:44 is from the Year of Jubilee laws.
Concluding with Lev 25: 54 " 'Even if he is not redeemed in any of these ways, he and his children are to be released in the Year of Jubilee, 55 for the Israelites belong to me as servants. They are my servants, whom I brought out of Egypt. I am the LORD your God.
If would have been nice if you understand the verse you were quoting.

Slavery is outlawed in most civilized countries. You must either be totally uncivilized, or live in an uncivilized country.
By the way, Canadians make poor slaves. They're too busy inventing things for Americans to take credit for.

first look at who leviticus was written to and what it was about. It was basically the civil laws made by the religious leaders of the early israelites. The Bible is not just full of each and every word spoken by God. it is also a history book that speaks of early jewish life.

Slavery today can be translated as employees.
Their wages you give time provide them with food, clothing, shelter and medical bills, much like you would do if you lived 150 years ago. You would be responsible for their well being.
If you want a slave, higher someone to work for you.

Give your friend some money to buy a Canadian slave. If he doesn't get SMITED after a few days, then you're good.
