I've read parents commenting on leaving their toddlers in time-out so long they fell asleep!! We're talking about children under the age of two! It was my understanding that two minutes is long enough for a two-year-old. Rule of thumb: one minute of time-out per year of age. What do you think?

Agreed! But Time Out shouldn't even begin until age 2. A child really isnt ready for that form of disapline before 2. But absoultely... Rule of Thumb: 1 minute per year of age.

I agree with the other answers but also want to add a few tips... The child must understand the rules, and what the consequence will be if the rule is broken. Also, time out only begins once the child is actually in the time out spot (preferably not the bedroom, so that it can be a happy place), which can result in returning a willful toddler to the spot for over an hour until the two minutes actually begins. Using an egg-timer, or the cell phone alarm helps mark time for the child.
Also, imagine if you were a prisoner in jail.. once your time was up, you wouldnt want to be constantly reminded about why you were in, so let it go and remember to REDIRECT the kid to an acceptable activity instead of just sending the ex-con back into society with no options but to reoffend.j/k

One minute per year of age. I do admit that I go 2 1/2 minutes for a 2 1/2 year old! Woo-wee! If they leave time out you will need to take them back and start the time over.

I think that kids shouldn't get time outs untill the age of 2.5-3. Before that, they just dont understand why they are being left alone. I also always worked withbthe rule you mentioned, 1 minute per year of age.

I agree with the one minute per year of age rule but I found that time outs started working just after 18 months.

At 18 months I would only put them in for 90 seconds (per above rule)

One Minute of time-out per year of age. My daughter is 4 and she only gets 4 mins of time-out. Ive worked in Child Care since 1995 and Ive had many classes on disciplining and they all have this rule of thumb!

Rule of thumb: one minute of time-out per year of age. This is basically the rule to follow unless what they did was really horrendous like purposely breaking something of value or injuring a family pet.

I have a 22 mth old and I go by that same rule of thumb. Unless he is throwing a major temper tantrum then he has to sit in the "time out" chair until he calms down. As far as a child being under 2 and not ready for displine I would have to say that depends soley on the child and no one knows your child better than you. I have been using time out for a while now and its amazing at what a 1yr old knows and understands. I knwo that after a sit in the time out chair his attitude changed dramatically even as young as 12mths!

i think that one minute of time out per year of age is good starting with the age of two because any child under the age of two isnt going to understand what is going on anyway
