First you need to understand that your personal computer is just a piece of HARDWARE machinery that will just sit there looking like some boxes and wires without SOFTWARE.
Bill Gates who once worked for IBM Corporation
formed his own corporation and named it MICROSOFT.
He invented an Operating System that was much prettier than old DOS Operating System that was a black screen with green letters...
his new colorful Operating System was called
WindowsNT
THENWindows 95
Then he improved it to Windows 98,
then Windows ME (which was a step backward)
then Windows 2000
then Windows XP
Windows 2000 and Windows XP Operating Systems
are better because they are not related to old DOS
that crashed frequently.
W2000 and WXP are both based on NT (NewTechnology)
They rarely to never crash.
Windows XP is the most popular Operating System todate.
The next is Windows VISTA, which may or may not be as poplular because it requires no less than a whole gigabyte to operate. I'm not interested.
I'm happy with my Windows XP Operating System.
An operating system gets your computer started up, and loads all the programs you enjoy using, including at ability to access your Inernet Provider and the internet.

Microsoft XP is a standalone Software. It is the Operating System necessary to make your Laptop computer Work. Normally you may have Windows XP installed and then the Laptop Vendor at his own prerogative or at your request may install Microsoft Office ( Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access FrontPage etc. belong in here.) on your Laptop. It is not necessary that just because you bought a brand new Laptop it has to come installed with Microsoft Office as well. Surely some kind of Office should have been installed. You should ask your Laptop Vendor as to what happened. It is possible that the vendor did not install Office Program because he would have to buy it separately as office Suite too, is a stand-alone Program. It is also a possibility that there is some version of Office installed on your Laptop and that the Vendor just did not create an Icon for it on the desktop. Do a ' search ' within your laptop and see if it has Corel WordPerfect or some such version of Word ( and other such programs ) are installed.
