Were you in the school doghouse as a result?

I have never spoken sternly to ANY child at my children's elementary school. However, I have quietly and kindly corrected or reprimanded other people's children. I often use phrases such as, "It is not OK", " I am so sorry you made such a bad choice, lets go find your teacher or principal", "Please stop right now or I'll get (teacher or principal)"

I am a substitute teacher. In my work experience I have found that other people's children respond to a quiet and kind voice much better than a stern voice.

As a teacher I know this may sound bad but you have to put your foot down or else these kids will walk all over you. I have two in my class that are just unbearable but I try my best and i have to be very strick. I have even been told by one of the parents that they have noticed a change and that they have never had a teacher care so much about their child. I think it is more like tough love. Even though I am strict and a little loud at times the kids (i have been told) really think that I am a great teacher to them and the kids, I have found that they have found me caring and wanting the best for them

When volunteering at school, I have usually been told that the kids should show the same respect to a parent in the school as to a teacher. And that the parent volunteers should be free to enforce the rules. I've spoken sternly, threatened to send kids back to sit at their desk with their head down and asked them if they are "using their PAWS" (school behaviors) many times.

Nope, although I could have well been. I once almost lost my temper with a kid while volunteering... I had been sick that day, and I was in high school, and I basically told him in front of all the other kids that if he didn't have anything but a bad attitude than he should just shut his mouth. I really regretted it and still feel bad, but he never complained. He also didn't show me attitude from then on, but I really wish I had dealt with it better. I guess I was just a kid myself though, so we all make mistakes.

Back in the day parents could discipline each other's children if they lacked respect, I wish people weren't so touchy about it today.

If you are a teaching assistant at the school, you are well within your rights to remonstrate with the child, and the school should support you and back you up. However, as purely a concerned parent you should report matters of serious indiscipline, bullying etc directly to the principal of the school. They should have a written policy on how these matters are dealt with. Legally the school acts 'in loco parentis'. Intervening directly either with the child or their parent could be seen as harassment and (farcically!) invoke censure on you.
