I want a puppy and have done alot of research into Boxers. I love what I hear, but when people say that they are very high energy and playful...does that mean that they don't really ever just lay down and relax much or just lie around in the evenings after the initial excitement passes?

Because I love the "youthful spirit" and have big plans to keep my puppy motivated and active. I don't like lazy/lap dogs but I'm sure I'll just need some downtime too and was looking for advice from other owners.

Based on my own experience and what I've heard from other people, Boxers can be very active, but they can be couch potatoes, too :) Our Boxer (almost 2 yrs now) is very playful and crazy, but she settles down just fine when it is time to relax. She has even started giving us dirty looks when we aren't back in our room at "bedtime." And if we sit down to watch TV at night, she will crawl into our laps and fall asleep.

Setting and maintaining a schedule will definitely help a puppy know how to act and when to expect playtime versus downtime.

Boxers are great dog, but they also have health problems that go with the breed. I have lost 2 dog to cardiomyopathy, a heart disease one at 5 1/2 months and one at 8 1/2 yrs. They also get tumors which can be cancer. You also need to find a breeder who is breeding for the breed & not for the money. I have learned that the hard way the baby was from a money breeder and the older one came from a pet store.I now have a healthy 2yr old Maggie Mae,with all the ups & and downs the breed has given me I will never be without a boxer in my life!!!Good luck!!!

Yes, boxer do relax. I LOVE boxers, and i do not like dogs that are overly energetic. I find boxers to be fun and playful without being overly boystrous. I think they have a perfect personality. When i was living with my parents our neighbors had a boxer that we used to watch for a week or two at a time since he was a puppy. And he was the BEST dog!! He loved to play, and he did cute goofy things, but he would lay down and take naps, and he used to sleep with me in my bed throughout the Whole night!! I also work at a vet clinic, and we see a lot of boxers. I love EVERY one of them that comes in. Very good dogs, you sound like you did your homework on them, i think it will be a perfect match!

i am working thru my first boxer also and had the same questions as you...i got my boxer at 7wks old and now he is 9months old and is full of energy. i jog in the mornings so i take him with me and he loves it....but when i want to just relax and watch some tv, he doesn't mind either..he will just lay on my legs and chill with me..so u should be ok...they do have alot of energy so make sure u are up for it. if u aren't he/she will find a way to release that energy....

listen i have owned boxers all my life and not only do they calm down and like to sleep but they absolutely love to cuddle. if you have kids they'd love to be your kids pillow or yours for that matter
i am telling you get a boxer and you will never want anything else. they are extremely loveable. they absolutely love people and when they give you that certain look that only a boxer can give you'll swear that dog thinks he's human. plus their great watch dogs but definately not gaurd dogs. what i mean is they'll let you know someone's coming but after that its up to you to take care of the situation. cuz a boxer will welcome a robber into your house with love and kisses just as much as she would grandma. that is because of their over welming love of all people. which is good cuz she wont get attatched to just one member of your family like a lot of dogs do but will love them all!!!! boxers are awesome!!!!

I LOVE MY BOXER !!!!! We have had Ginger 7yrs. She can be totally INSANE when she plays ( still...after all these years ) But she LOVES to lay around on the couch, or on your feet...and give you DIRTY looks when you trip on her. Boxers are great for following your lead....they will be up or down according to your mood. They can be very sensitive though....will sulk if you upset them. And they do have health issues...and supposedly dont live very long either. You will LOVE a BOXER...they are the BEST !!!!

the priority with all 3 canine is they have a foul rep (regardless of the actuality that the Boxer more desirable because those who recognize no longer some thing about breeds in many cases mistake them for 'pits.') So in truth, you ought to be an excellent proprietor and your canine is instantly away a diplomat for his or her breed. in the experience that they behave horrendously, all and sundry will observe and it is going to harm the breed as an entire. in the experience that they behave properly, some may observe yet maximum individuals will over seem them. they're all intense capacity breeds who go with various of stimulation, in many cases actual yet also psychological. they ought to have agency obstacles besides, and there is not any backing down or spoiling them. i ought to in my view commence off with a smaller a lot less stressful to regulate breed that do not have the 'popularity' that those 3 have. A breed it is more desirable forgiving to a popular time proprietor that still matches your life-type. in case you go with to get any of those breeds regardless of the actuality that, bypass to a rescue or to a respected breeder. do no longer purchase from the first June or Tom who occurs to be promoting them, and do not imagine that having AKC or any form of titles ability a lot. undesirable breeders have achieved various of damage to all 3 breeds, and also you do not go with to finally end up with a canine who became bred to be aggressive.
