You will need your W-2's and any other tax statements such as interest or dividends. If you don't have anyother income and no deductions, you really don't have to pay someone like H & R Block, try it yourself, you will be surprised how easy it is. As a matter of fact, if you fill out the top of the form, IRS will finish your tax if you are filing the standard deduction and only have W-2's as income.

It's entirely possible to receive more than was paid in. In fact, in the situation presented it's EXTREMELY common, so much so that it's almost unavoidable. If they claimed zero withholding allowances on their W-4 about $1,900 would have been withheld in Federal income tax. If they claimed 1 allowance it would be about $1,600. They would not have a Federal tax liability until their income reached $18,050 and the Child Tax Credit would wipe that out. They would be eligible for an EIC payment of about $4,161 and and Additional Child Tax Credit of around $937. Crunch those numbers and it's entirely possible to be looking at a refund of $6,600 to $6,900 or more. Since there is no tax liability at all, you would simply add up the withholding amount, the EIC and the ACTC to arrive at the net refund.

I would practically beg you not to do that!

If you make less than $52k a year, or if you qualify for the EITC then you can usually do a free file. It's an e-file that is free and if you combine it with direct deposit you can get your refund in 9-14 days. If you file before Thursday and do free file you get your refund on February 9th!! My personal favorite is TurboTax... H&R Block does the same thing but last year they FORGOT to file my friend’s taxes when she did them online... don't ask me how, I have no idea.

I would only say "yeah go ahead" to going to H&R block office if you had super complicated taxes. For me I did FreeFile with TurboTax and I have it a bit complicated and it will still handle it for you. They walk you through step by step. In my case I have retirement contributions, daycare, BUT this year her dad gets to claim her as a dependant so she is only my "qualifying child" and I can only take certain things because of it... TurboTax is "smart" enough and can handle probably 95% of returns.

You could do that, but if you don't have a lot of other documents, it's cheaper to do it online yourself with Turbotax. HR Block really only pays for itself if you have a complicated return. Try one of the online ones first, I bet you would find it easy to do.

All you have to do is call them on the phone and make an appointment. Ask them the charges and if they will accept a check or credit card; some companies are green cash only.

I don't know if all will be well, but if you have all your tax documents for the year, you're ready to file.
