Ok i have a Siberian husky so i know what its like to walk big dogs, but I'm just wondering if dog walking is a good idea, i would charge like $5 for a reg size dog but like $10 for a large dog. Another thing is i was going to ask a friend to help me but her dad says we have to work at the pet place in my town but they aren’t hiring and I'm to young to get a job because I'm only 13 and people hire here at like 14 or 15 but then my mom says we should do it so should we talk to her dad about it because this is the best time of year to walk people dog because everyone wants to stay in side because its like -20 out and colder over the weekend and it could be a great opportunity, so please people give good answer and no stupid things please, i Do Not Want to Put Up With It thanks

Hi. I used to walk dogs around my neighborhood when i was your age. I didn't charge people, i just did it because i loved it, and i never had a dog of my own. But i guess $5-$10 is a good price, but i wouldn't charge based on size, maybe charge by time. Like 1/2 hour is $5, more than that is $10, or something like that. And also, just to be safe, alsways make sure the dogs collar is on tight enough, and it's not going to slip over their head. This has happened to me before when walking someone else's dog. Luckily nothing bad happened, and the dog didn't go anywhere, but make sure it is tight enough (not TOO tight) just to be safe.

Other than walking dogs, i know you are young now, but maybe in a year or two check out volunteering at your local animal shelter or try getting an assistant job at a veterinary office. I have never worked at a pet store, but i have volunteered and an animal shelter, and i am now a vet tech, and work at a vet office. I loved doing both, you get to interact with all the animals. I hope this helps. Have fun working with animals!!! I know i wouldn't have it any other way.

i saw someone else's answer, i think a groomer would also be an excellent career for the future if you want to work with animals. I still would someday like to be a groomer.

I think that at your age it would be a great idea for you to
volunteer at your local vet if she or he has a boarding
facility. They need to walk all their dogs a few times a day
and you could become familiar with the different breeds and
their habits. I'm sure they'de go for this, and it would be easy
to meet people that in the future might want to hire you. You
would already know their dogs and vice-versa. Most vets
that board have safe areas around their property for you to
try this out. You'll learn a lot, and it will look good on your
resume. Who knows, you might even want to become a
veterinarian yourself some day.

i think the charges are fine and i really think you should talk to your friends dad becuase making a business on walking dogs is a really good opportunity because of the weather outside. Even though the pet place isn't hiring... you could start your own dog walking business and that would get you a lot of money and you could have a lot of fun,
hope all goes well!

im a dog groomer
if you are interested in that career, i make about $25 an hour, plus tips. At your age you might be able to get a job as a bather, which could eventually lead to styling as you get more experience. good luck

and... don't go into business with freinds, even at 13, trust me on this

Good luck, I'd never hand my dog over to some strange kid, or anybody else. Luckily for you there are a lot of people who'd rather stay inside out of the cold than take care of their dogs.
