The Army does just as much time on the frontlines as the Marines. The Army is not in any way a back up. The only back ups are the reserve units and the National Guard, but they do just as much fighting as the others as well recently. In many cases, there are actually more reserve and guard units deployed than there are active duty units. The truth is that no matter which branch of the military you decide to go with, you have a pretty good chance of ending up on the frontlines. They all do thier part, so whichever one you decide to go with, thank you for wanting to serve. Not everyone is willing to do that anymore.

You can't really compare the two equally. The army is much bigger, so there are more varied opportunites for you if you chose it. In the Marines, every Marine is a rifleman, that is, all are trained for combat, whereas int he army you have many non-combat careers, such as quatermaster, finance corps, JAG, etc.
If you are interested in the marines, you are probably looking into Infantry, or Armor. The army is definitely not backup, check out the Airborne. The 82nd and 101st are the first into the fight, even before the Marines (who usually travel by ship), since they are dropped by airplanes into the fight.
Of course, there are the Special Ops, who go in even earlier. If you want to be a Ranger, or other special operator, you will see far more action than the average marine. If you want to drive a tank, operate heavy artillery, intelligence, signal corps, etcetc you'd be better off in the Army.
That said, I'd probably be a Marine if I wanted to fight. There is a higher level of esprit de corps, and a greater emphasis on combat (with the exception of the groups I mentioned.) Check out the army website and the marine one.

The Army and the Marines are put on the front line first. I don't care what anyone says the Marines and the Army have it just as hard. There is a unit called the Rangers of the Army. My husband is one and I know retired Marines who have told me that the Army Rangers are just as good. The Rangers are thought of very highly and there aren't too many people who pass this school. It is 3 months of HELL. Good luck to you and your decision.

A Quick Reply to The Maestro:
MARINE: Muscles Are Required, Intelligence Not Essential
A couple basic differences between the two: Marines have a 12 week basic training and generally have their jobs chosen for them or it takes a secondary position to the physical and war required training whereas the army has a 9 week basic (unless you are infantry or such, where you will have more extensive training after the basic) and although it depends on your ASVAB scoring, are allowed to choose from a list for your MOS based on that scoring. The army is also on the front lines. Infantry, rangers, special forces. But as to which one you should join, you should do your own research as much as possible and then find the answer within yourself. (I would however like to add that my husband's commander used to be a marine and is now happily seving in the U.S. Army! Hooah!)

Marines are no harder than the Army except maybe the yelling and that's about it.I went in the real Army class of 78 the Marines trained with us guess were Ft.Benning Ga.Half of them we had to shove out the damn plane sissy jar heads. No really their some good guys in both branches.Today's boot camp is nothing like we had to endure. We had to do pull-ups before we could go in the mess hall.I also trained with some force recon, when I went through the Q course at special ops training at FT,Bragg,so take your time both branches have a lot to offer.Good Luck.

In today's world there are no real battle lines. Each branch of military has there own roll to play. The Marines are protecting our Embassies and Navel vessels world wide, as well as on our day to day patrols, convoys & operations. The Army also performs day to day operations, patrols, & convoys. Suggest getting with all branches services listen to what they have to say find a job you’re interested in, there's more out there than just the infantry.

Its a good thing thing for any American to serve this country. No Matter what decision you make you will be doing something alot of people wouldnt. I say If your gonna do something do it right. And be the Best! I dont know but I joined the Marines. Cause I wanted to be the best. The Marines are the FEW and the PROUD. It is a title not many have. And many wish they did. But like I said, any service is great....
P.S. JOIN THE MARINES!!!!

Marine are the first ones in and the last one out.
Army is not there for backup.
Army is a bigger force so it attacks more in mass.
If you want to secure a beachhead or get a place on the beach in enemy territory. The marines will do it.
If you want to secure a place and move across enemy territory in bulk oncve you've had your position. That is the Army's job.
I like the Airforce myself.

Marines are the first to die, then comes the Army, and then the Navy.
If you don't have much of a life to begin with-I'd go for the Marines.
