I don't know. I've known atheists that I would call moral.

This is something I have wondered about in many ways. Whenever a Christian makes a wrong choice and screws up, everyone points the finger and labels him a hypocrite or a fake or even condemns all Christians because of him. Yet when the unbelievers make a bad choice the reaction is, Oh well, the guy is only human.
People just don't understand that Christians are still very much human just like everybody else. We have ALL fallen short of the glory of God. We are still sinners like the rest of the world. We still make mistakes based on poor judgment. Christians are not perfect and won't be perfect until they stand in the presence of God. As long as we are in these imperfect bodies in this imperfect world, we are really still humans capable of immorality, lying, gossiping, and all the rest of it.
We can be as good as the worst sinner also.
The only one thing different between the saved sinner and the unsaved sinner is Forgiveness, an act of Grace on God's part, through Jesus Christ who bore the punishment by death on the cross for ALL of mankind's sins, past, present and future. The believer has accepted God's grace, and is indebted to God to continue his life under the process of sanctification, repenting each time he makes a bad judgment and sins.

I suspect that it is because we live by the laws of God, and although others may live a moral life by their standard, we have no idea how they live by God's standard.
To me it really don't matter, if a person does not want to live according to God's standard, that is solely up to them.

moral is a question of opinion. of course, God's opnion is worth a lot more than yours, as it's His universe...
