Law of physics: Energy can neither be created nor destroyed, but it can be changed into other forms of energy or matter. Examples: Potential energy, for instance an object sitting upon the edge of desk, will change into kinetic energy if the object falls, resuming potential energy when it is at rest again. The potential energy of a combustible entity converts to heat if it is ignited; the potential energy of a match bursts into flame if it is struck. The atomic energy of a bomb becomes heat and radiation when it explodes. For every action there is an exchange of energy.

All great answers. I think it has to go somewhere though. I can understand better the thought that it always exists, it just spread out in space. If energy cannot be created or destroyed the we would have to assume there is a given amount of energy in the universe. If energy is always present and spread out, why doesn't it hurt to live in/around it? I guess it is spread out most the time but when it is accumulated heavily in one area (like electricity at home) then it kills.

Nothing, energy cannot be created nor destroyed only changed from one form to another. If you expend 20 J of energy to set a block of wood in motion, the energy is now changed into potential energy and would be released if it struck another object and that other object moved.

Electrical energy when used for example can be tranformed into heat, or kinetic energy.

It doesnt really go anywhere. Energy exists in two forms, Potential and Kinetic. When you stretch a rubber band or even light a fuse to a bomb you are storing potential energy when the rubber band shhots or the bomb explodes its Kinetic energy is released. When that is finished the energy returns to potential and stores up for the next thing that will set it off.

It's like a light bulb. Once the energy is used to light the bulb then it has disapated as heat into the atmosphere or like gas in a car. The fuel burns and thus propels the car and is released out the exhaust as heat.

energy is always conserved. it does not gets used up. It only changes its form.
