You can order "announcement" cards. They look like wedding invites, but annouce the wedding after the fact.

Send out announcements. People do this all the time. If any is to attend the private wedding they most likely will know about it because you have told and "invited" them. Besides, why not do the whole wedding dress on the beach? It makes great announcement photos.

You can always let them know, personally, I mean plan a gathering/party, and announce it. It will be a great way for them to be surprised, and it will be possible to tell them all at once. Unless, of course they are not in the same city as you, in that case you can send them virtual wedding invitations, or the classic "Your Invited Card".

If you're planning on inviting them? Send them a nice picture invitation of the two of you, a casual one (like you two hiking or something), inviting them to a bbq/picnic type thing where ever you're planning it. It'll be nice... like Sandra Bullock did (though she wasn't the first to do this...)
Or, if you're planning on not telling anyone, just send everyone a picture of the two of you after it's done with a note saying "we were drunk... but we're still having a party!" lol everyone loves a chance to celebrate things... One way or another, I'm sure it'll be a beautiful wedding. All the best!...

Invitations in this case will work. Just add a note to them stating that this will be a small and private wedding.

Send out cards close to the wedding date, letting them know that you're getting married and ask for blessing.

the announcement thing works well.

I've had friends that also did a "reception" after they got back from honeymoon. It was a very relaxed way of hanging out with friends/family while they still got to have their "intimate" wedding
