Venus is twice the distance to the sun as Mercury. However, it's surface temperature is higher than that of Mercury. How can this be?
Mercury has virtually no atmosphere. Venus has a thick atmosphere of about 95% carbon dioxide, an extreme example of the greenhouse effect. Why is there even a debate about the existence of this natural phenonomen?

When temperature measurements of Venus' atmosphere became possible, the result was unexpected and much higher than estimated based on the distance of the planet from the sun. When the composition of Venus' atmosphere was determined, that led to the global warming discovery. Not until the observed atmospheric increase in CO2 in earth's atmosphere and increasing indications of actual increases in surface temperature, did the association become evident. Of course, Venus is an extreme example, but it is a model for what can happen.

NOTE: While the average temperature of Venus may be higher than mercury, the comparison is not really valid, since Mercury faces one side to the sun at all times; that side gets extremely hot, but the other side is extremely cold. If Mercury rotated and the temperature distribution was more uniform, it would then be reasonable to compare them.

Based on your hypothesis the sun does not get "trapped" in the atmosphere because of the supposed way greenhouse gases burn a whole in the atmosphere to let the sun in.
You know the FACT is that nobody knows what causes global warming. What is out there is nothing more than hypothesises. In the 1970's when there was MORE greenhouse gases in the air than now people of the world thought there was global cooling.
The FACT is that we don't know if the warming is part of El Nino, natural earth heating & cooling cycles, or greenhouse gasses burning a hole in the atmosphere.
I guess this won't get best answer, but liberals are never interested in the truth anyway.

I agree with you, but Venus's atmosphere is 80x as dense as ours and while most of it's atmosphere is CO2, our atmosphere is less then 1% CO2. Venus certainly dispalys the effects of global warming but is quite an extreme example.
